Image: Fury vs. Grano possible for December 1stBy William Mackay: Unbeaten #4 WBC heavyweight contender Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s) could be facing #5 WBC Tony Grano (20-2, 16 KO’s) on December 1st. The 24-year-old Fury says that he’ll be fighting a top 5 contender on 12/1, although he doesn’t say which one.

However, #1 WBC Chris Arreola and #2 WBC Bermane Stiverne are already scheduled to face each other, and #3 Denis Boytsov likely wouldn’t ever agree to fight Fury in the UK, which is where Fury plans on fighting next. That leaves only the 6’2″, 31-year-old Grano to fight Fury on December 1st if Fury is serious about fighting a top 5 WBC contender.

Fury said on his twitter page “I am fighting someone in the top five. Guess who? All you haters are so sad!”

I have a feeling that the haters will have a lot of ammunition to bombard Fury with if he faces Grano, because he’s only ranked in the top 15 by one boxing organization and he’s rather undersized for a heavyweight at 6’2″ 221 lbs. He’s like another Tomasz Adamek-sized heavyweight, who will be way over his head against the bigger heavyweights in the division.

Guys like Adamek and Grano would be perfect if there were two separate heavyweight classes – one for the smaller heavyweights like them and another for the super heavyweights like Wladimir Klitschko, David Price, Tyson Fury, Kubrat Pulev, Alexander Dimitrenko, Alexander Ustinov, Chris Arreola, Stiverne, and Robert Helenius.

Fury’s promoter Mick Hennessy wants to keep Fury unbeaten long enough to get him a title shot against either one of the Klitschko brothers or for the vacant WBC heavyweight strap if WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko retires next year. The only dangerous fight that Fury could take part in before he gets a title shot is a possible fight against David Price next year in the summer time if Hennessy lets Fury take the fight.

What makes Grano such a poor choice for Fury is that Grano was stopped in the 2nd round by one of Fury’s recent victims Nicolai Firtha two years ago in June 2010. Fury might as well fight Firtha again rather than taking on someone that Firtha destroyed in the 31-year-old Grano.
