Tyson Fury: Preemptively Patting Himself on the Back

Tyson Fury made a preemptive request to the media today, asking them not to say Oleksandr Usyk is “s***” after he defeated him on May 18th in their undisputed heavyweight championship in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

WBC heavyweight champion Fury (34-0-1, 24 KOs) wants to ensure he’s given full credit for beating the former undisputed cruiserweight Usyk (21-0, 14 KOs). Fury’s entire strategy for winning is based on physics. Use his weight and let gravity take over.

“Please don’t say Usyk’s s*** after I beat him, because he’s not,” said Tyson Fury during today’s press conference talking about his opponent for May 18th, IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk.

Fury will rely on size against a fighter with actual talent who can do it all in the ring—box, move, change angles, and punch a little. Usyk is everything that Fury is not.

I don’t see the 270+ lb behemoth Fury credit because he’s going to outweigh the 220+ lb Usyk by 50 lbs and will surely use his mauling style to just lean on him the way he does all his opponents at this stage in his career.

The Fury Fighting Formula – It’s Not Complicated

  • Grab: Put his Grizzly bear arms around his opponents and hold them still so they can’t escape.
  • Lean: Put all his 270+ lb weight on the fighter and force them to support him while the referee looks on, not breaking the non-action.
  • Rinse and Repeat: Continue this pattern until the opponent is exhausted from carrying around his weight.

Fury’s fighting style is basic at this point in his career and nowhere near elite. It’s just a big guy that grabs and leans. He’s nowhere near the best heavyweight in the division and never was.

Fury: His Biggest Strength? He’s Big

“I’m the best. I’m just defending my ‘best-ness’ against him,” said Fury about Usyk. “We have weight divisions for a reason. When the cruiserweights step up to the big boys, they have usually been found wanting. You can beat the average big ones, but you can’t beat the elite big ones because size really matters. These are facts.”
