McKenna (McJack): Up and coming heavyweight prospect Tyson Fury (19-0, 14 KO’s) went on an expletive deleted rant against British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (14-0, 12 KO’s) over the weekend. The rant, because of its nature, served the purpose of drawing a huge amount of negative attention to Fury.

And that may be exactly what Tyson hopes to accomplish by his denigration of Price, who appears at the moment to be a shooting star in the eyes of his boxing fans. David’s quick KO of Audley Harrison (28-6, 21 KO’s) last Saturday night propelled him into the forefront of British heavyweight fighters.

Some Price fans have gone way out on a limb by suggesting that David may be the heir apparent to heavyweight great Lennox Lewis. British boxing fans are eager to come up with an alternative heavyweight fighter to replace former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (26-2, 24 KO’s) after the “Hayemaker” failed miserably in his attempt to dethrone WBA/IBF/WBO/IBO and The Ring heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (58-3, 51 KO’s) in July 2011. Thousands of ardent British supporters traveled to Hamburg to cheer Haye on, only to have him put in a disappointing performance.

To make matters worse, Haye then appeared to blame his lackluster showing on a broken pinky toe. It is now clear that British boxing fans are eager to seize the opportunity to throw their support behind any heavyweight who appears to have even a glimmer of hope at succeeding where the “Hayemaker” failed.

Fury for his part appears to be more than a little envious that Price is getting all the attention and is doing whatever he can to steal some of his thunder. To be sure, Price does appear to be a more serious threat to the Klitschko’s or for whoever may follow them. He has demonstrated that he has a potent right hand and is capable of taking any opponent out with one punch. There has also been a marked improvement in David’s left hook.

Fury on the other hand uses his sheer size and strength to bludgeon his opponents into submission. In addition Tyson sometimes appears clumsy, which may be a problem when he tangles with a top notch opponent.

It is inevitable that sooner or later Fury and Price will clash. The current feud between Fury, and Price will only serve to whet the appetite of boxing fans who are only too eager to watch the two fighters slug it out after first hurling insults at each other. The David Haye – Derek Chisora clash this past summer bears witness to that.
