By Scott Gilfoid: I got a kick out of the James DeGale (12-1, 9 KO’s) and Hadillah Mohoumadi (13-2-1, 9 KO’s) press conference to publicize their fight on Saturday for DeGale’s EBU super middleweight title at the at GLOW at Bluewater, Kent.

As far as the two fighters go there wasn’t much to say between them because this is another hopeless mismatch setup for DeGale, as he seems to be following in the same path as Nathan Cleverly in taking soft opposition. But what was interesting was when DeGale’s promoter Mick Hennessy blathering about how much DeGale is like WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward, and how he’s the only one that can beat him. That was too funny. Here DeGale can’t even conclusively beat the likes of Piotr Wilczewski and George Groves, two limited fighters, and Hennessy is talking about how DeGale is the guy to beat Ward. What a dream. I hope he doesn’t succeed in putting DeGale in with Ward next year because DeGale will get his head boxed off. He’d lose every round until Ward puts him out of his misery.

Here’s some of the stuff DeGale said “Hopefully, I can fight for a world title next year…I’m looking to make history in the next couple of years. Exciting future, I can’t wait.”

Now here’s just a small taste of what Hennessy had to say: “I consider that James has talent similar to Andre Ward. My job is for him to use that talent. Let’s not forget that Andre Ward won his gold medal four years before James, so when the time comes, they’re both gold medalists, when the time is right, James DeGale is the only fighter capable of beating Andre Ward. He’s got that supreme talent. We’ve got the most talented super middleweight in the world, barring Andre Ward.”

Gosh, Hennessy sounds like he’s not connected with reality here. DeGale isn’t anything like Ward, and he’s definitely not going to beat him in this lifetime unless Hennessy has DeGale come look Ward up when he’s 80-years-old. Then maybe he might be able to beat him then, but not before. That’s not going to happen, believe me. But as far as comparisons go, I couldn’t think of a more different fighter than DeGale is compared to Ward. DeGale is a slow, flat-footed fighter, whereas Ward is fast on his feet with blazing hand speed. DeGale reminds me more of an Arthur Abraham type with the slow hands and feet than Ward.

DeGale has an easy fight on his hands this Saturday against Hadillah Mohoumadi. This is a terrible mismatch, and it’s so sad that DeGale is being spoon fed weak opposition still at this point in his career. Mohoumadi is coming off of a loss in his last fight against Nikola Sjekloca last July, and I don’t quite understand how or why this guy is being given a shot at the EBU title. I mean, is this how things go with the European Boxing Union straps? You lose a fight and then you get a title shot? I’d like to think that the EBU had better standards than that, but I guess not.
