Image: Andre Ward or Joe Calzaghe: Who would win?By Steven Ocallaghan: Respected boxing journalist Steve Bunce has opened up a great debate in who would win in a Joe Calzaghe v Andre Ward fight, and I would have to agree with Bunce, Calzaghe every time.

You can compare some of the fighters each has faced or past opponents who have face each other and I still have to say Calzaghe.

Ward is a great fighter, but also can fight dirty at times who comes in with his head and follows up with elbows, but there was no better fighter than Calzaghe for adapting to the required situation. Ward had a good win, but a win over a weight drained Chad Dawson, also a great but tough win over Carl Froch. Froch did say he thought that Calzaghe would win a boxing contest but he could maybe win a slugfest though.

Comparing past foes there is Mikkel Kessler and Sakio Bika, both had already lost to Calzaghe in their prime before fighting Ward. Kessler in particular has never really been the same since but is always still a tough competitor.

Ward has also fought and decisioned Edison Miranda, while Miranda has been stopped by Tony Bellew, Arthur Abraham and Lucien Bute. He decisioned Allan Green, but Green has since been KOed by Kessler.

Calzaghe had power and speed. He even put the Granite-jawed Chris Eubank on the deck when he won the title back in October 1997.

The thing to remember is that Calzaghe won the title back in 1997. He then went on to have 21 defences, has beaten 7 previous world champions and went undefeated in 46 fights over a 15 year boxing career.

Ward has and will carry on to have a great career, but Calzaghe remains for me the best super middleweight over the past 25 years.
