Image: McCrory sees Brook as a problem for Ricky HattonBy William Mackay: Sky Sports News columnist Glenn McCrory is firmly against former two time world champion Ricky Hatton staging a comeback at this point. McCrory thinks Hatton has been out of the sport for too long and he’s not treated his body the right way by indulging in an extravagant lifestyle.

McCrory said in his column at Sky Sports News “If Hatton did return he could tarnish the legacy that he worked ever so hard to create…Reports are suggesting that he could battle Paul Malignaggi…I wouldn’t want Ricky to face anybody. And where else, apart from Malignaggi, could he go anyway? Would you put him with Kell Brook? No, because Kell would destroy him.”

Not just Brook, who is a pretty flawed fighter in his own right as we saw recently with his terrible performance against Carson Jones, but Hatton would be in trouble against pretty much all of the top light welterweights and welterweight contenders. He would have to really cherry pick to find someone that he would have a good chance of success against.

Malignaggi might be someone that Hatton could beat if he comes back, but I wouldn’t count on it. Malignaggi is a better fighter now that he’s at welterweight and his movement might cause Hatton fits. Hatton hasn’t taken a hard shot since his 2nd round TKO loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2009, and his chin might not be as good as it once was.

If Hatton is okay with fighting little known opponents, I can see him finding success with a comeback in the short term. However, if and when Hatton finally faces someone that’s actually any good, he’ll likely get knocked out again like he was against Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao.

For some reason, McCrory sees Brook as someone that will win a title in the near future. I don’t see that happening. Brook’s fight against Jones exposed his limitations loud and clear, making it pretty obvious where Brook stands. I rate him just a shade below Jones, who I see as a bottom 10 guy. I don’t see Jones as someone that will ever win a world title, and I certainly don’t see Brook as being capable of winning a major belt. He’ll get a title shot sooner or later against the IBF welterweight champion but he won’t win.
