By William Mackay: Frustrated with his inability to land a fight against former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan, undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook spoke the obvious by saying that he feels that Khan has no chance of beating Floyd Mayweather Jr, if he can even get a fight against him.
Brook said to Sky Sports Ringside “Khan can’t beat Mayweather. I don’t know if it will happen but he can’t beat him. He’s got no chance.”
You think? Khan has other things to worry about aside from getting beaten by Mayweather. Khan’s career is on the brink of extinction if he loses his next fight against whoever his promoters at Golden Boy Promotions can dig up for him. Khan obviously isn’t going to fight anyone good at this point after losing his last two fights. They can’t afford to have Khan lose again and perhaps be bounced from having his fights televised on HBO. But it goes without saying that Khan can’t beat Mayweather.
Khan proved in his last two fights that he can’t even beat Lamont Peterson and Danny Garcia. If he can’t beat those guys then of course he can’t beat Mayweather, because he’s a level above those fighters.
Khan could still end up fighting Mayweather, though, if he can pick up a couple of wins against some fringe contenders or an old lion with a name. Too bad Khan didn’t get to 40-year-old Shane Mosley before Manny Pacquiao and Saul Alvarez defeated him recently. It would have been a good scalp to add to Khan’s resume. Now it’s too late. If Khan fights Mosley now he’ll look silly, like someone who needs to fight an over the hill guy just to get a name on his resume. It would be kind of like Khan’s fight against a past his best Marco Antonio Barrera.
Mayweather would decimate Khan if they fought with his pinpoint punches. I could see Khan staggered almost immediately and then put down on his back like he was against Breidis Prescott and Garcia in his knockout losses to both of them.
If Khan still wants the Mayweather fight he’s going to have to beat someone like Erik Morales and Lucas Matthysse for it to happen. It’s too late to get Morales because he’s already scheduled for a fight in October, so Khan is going to have to look in another direction.
