Image: Escobedo in tough fight against Broner on SaturdayBy Scott Gilfoid: Vincente Escobedo (26-3, 15 KO’s) is the latest fighter that will be trying to hand WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (23-0, 19 KO’s) when they meet up on Saturday night on HBO television to see who the top guy is in the WBC rankings.

Escobedo, 30, has got his hands full with this fight, because he’s taken some god awful punishment in fights against Robert Guerrero, Michael Katsidis and Rocky Juarez, and he’s not exactly a spring chicken anymore at 30, and that’s not a young 30 either.

Escobedo’s problems are many in this fight. He’s the slower guy, the weaker guy, the less skilled defensively guy and he’ll likely be the lighter guy as well. Escobedo, 5’8″, has an inch height advantage and a three inch reach advantage over Broner, but those areas aren’t going to help him much because Broner is so much quicker and stronger than him.

Broner is like Floyd Mayweather Jr., a fighter he patterns himself after, but a lot more deadly with his shots than Mayweather Jr. is. Escobedo tends to take a ton of punishment even in winning his fights. He can’t let that happen against Broner, because the fight will quickly get out of hand if Broner is allowed to tee off on Escobedo like he’s a punching bag, which is often what Escobedo looks like when he faces quality opposition.

Sure, he looks good against 3rd opponents, but you put Escobedo in with a quality guy like Guerrero, and he’s just taking shots one after another in a one-sided fight. Since Broner is a bigger puncher than Guerrero with better hand speed and accuracy, I have to say that Escobedo is going to be royally slaughtered on Saturday night, and there’s not much he can do about it other than hoping the fight gets stopped quickly to end the suffering. He’s not going tow in this fight, and the only thing that you can take from this is to hope the ending comes quick for him.
