Brandon Rios: I’m not afraid of Broner, but I probably won’t be able to fight him

Image: Brandon Rios: I'm not afraid of Broner, but I probably won't be able to fight himBy Allan Fox: Former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (30-0-1, 22 KO’s) says he has no qualms about fighting former WBO super featherweight champion Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) if the fight were to present itself to him. However, he doesn’t think it’s possible because of the fact he fights for a different promotional company [Top Rank].

Rios said to Ringnews24.com I’m not scared of him and would love to fight him, but with the feud between Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank Promotions, it’s unlikely that this fight would even happen.”

Rios also shot down the idea of him fighting WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia for the same reason. It makes you wonder what’s the use of fighting for Top Rank if Rios isn’t going to be able to fight the big names like Broner, Amir Khan or Garcia.

As it is, Rios is coming off an injury and won’t be available to fight until the very end of the year, if then. Rios, 26, looked horrible in winning a questionable 12 round split decision over Cuban Richard Abril last April. A lot of boxing fans didn’t think Rios deserved to get the decision in that fight. Indeed, I had Abril winning 10 rounds to 2. It was one of the most one-sided fights I’ve ever seen where the guy that appeared to lose was given the decision.

Rios will be moving up to the light welterweight division now, because he can no longer make the 135 pound weight limit for the lightweight division. However, with Rios having major problems making 135, it’s highly likely that he’ll have just as many problems trying to make the 140 pound division as well. If Rios can’t even make 140, he’s going to be in bad shape if he’s forced to fight at 147, because he doesn’t have the power, speed or the size to compete with the best in that weight class. He’ll likely have a ton of problems just trying to make it in the light welterweight division.
