Pacquiao should retire if he loses in November or looks bad again

Image: Pacquiao should retire if he loses in November or looks bad againBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KO’s) has looked awful in his last three fights and should have two losses instead of just one after getting what many boxing fans saw as a gift decision against 38-year-old Juan Manuel Marquez last November in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao is coming off of a defeat to Tim Bradley last June, and plans on fighting in November of this year against an opponent still to be determined. If Pacquiao loses that fight or stinks it up again in winning by another controversial decision, I think he should do the right thing by retiring from the sport before losing becomes a habit for him that he can’t shake. You know Pacquiao is getting up there in age at 33, and will be turning 34 in December.

The old legs aren’t getting Pacquiao around the ring like they used to, and he’s really just a fighter that battles hard for small periods of time in each round, generally near the end of the round. Pacquiao’s loss to Bradley showed that he’s very beatable now and can’t pull the trigger on his shots like he once did.

It’s kind of surprising how much things have changed since 2009 with Pacquiao’s game. He was a sprightly little engine back then, but the last three years have has really aged Pacquiao’s game. He looks like a fraction of his former self in the ring.

Pacquiao can’t handle movement now, even Bradley noticed that before after his win over the Filipino. Pacquiao probably should have hung up the gloves after his win over Antonio Margarito in November 2010. Pacquiao could have gotten out of the sport at a reasonably high point when he was still more or less there in terms of his skills. But his game has really deteriorated since then.

Pacquiao needs to stand up on his hind legs and push for the Mayweather fight for early 2013, because he may not get that cash that he was hoping to get if he gets beaten again this November. Pacquiao can at least get the Mayweather fight, take his loss, and get out of the sport before it really gets bad. I’d hate to see Pacquiao end up getting battered like Roy Jones Jr if he sticks around much longer.
