Image: Price still unproven; needs to face a quality opponent in his next fightBy Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated David Price (13-0, 11 KO’s) is getting a lot of praise right now for having beaten Sam Sexton last weekend by a 4th round TKO. I don’t see what the fuss is. Sexton didn’t even throw any punches and it was a really, really poor effort from a very rusty Sexton. Price had the victory handed to him by Sexton’s non effort.

The way that Sexton fought was the exact wrong way to fight Price. He knew he had to attack Price’s weak chin in order to have any chance of beating him, so what did Sexton do? Absolutely nothing. He just stood in front of Price like a statue for three rounds, not throwing punches and making it easy for him. By the time Sexton finally did start throw punches, he’d been knocked down twice in the fight. It was too late by then because he was already stunned from playing the punching bag for Price.

There’s talk of Price returning to the ring in a couple of months to fight on the undercard of Amir Khan’s next fight on July 7th. Price’s promoter Frank Maloney mentioned wanting to match him against some British fighters. The problem with that there’s really no one for him to match him again as far as I can tell. Dereck Chisora and David Haye are both busy.

Price already said he has no interest in facing Tyson Fury. Price already beat Sexton. That pretty much only leaves guys like Matt Skelton, Tom Dallas, Richard Towers and Michael Sprott. Those are hardly fighters that I would consider a step up from Sexton. If anything, you could consider them a lateral move. Are those the kinds of opponents that Price will fight next and if so, why?

I see Price matched up with more of the same type of opponents he’s been fighting since he turned pro. He won’t get much from them, and with Price about to turn 29, he’s really staying in place.
