Mosley looking slow, old and weak in training for Alvarez

By Chris Williams: 40-year-old Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO’s) isn’t looking too good as he gets ready for his May 5th bout against WBC 154 pound champion Saul Alvarez (39-0-1, 29 KO’s) on the undercard of Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

In a recent work out session taped by Fight Hub, Mosley looks slow, old and weaker than I can ever remember him looking. The speed and power seem to be completely gone. Mosley looks to be functioning at 60% of what he previously was in his prime of his career, and that’s probably not going to be good enough for him to beat the 21-year-old Alvarez in this fight.

In contrast to the way that Mosley has been looking, Alvarez is working hard, looking powerful if not speedy and he looks a lot more youthful in appearance. With Mosley, he’s got a lot of weight in his face, especially around his cheeks. I’m not sure if that’s fat or some kind of implants, but it looks terrible like he’s out of shape. I can’t see fat on his body but his face is a lot bigger than it was in his youth around the cheek area.

Mosley is going to have to look a lot better than he did in his last fight against Manny Pacquiao last year when he was handled with ease in a 12 round decision defeat in May of 2011. It was seen as a mismatch going into the PPV bout, and that’s exactly what it turned out to be. Mosley was beaten, and he was forced to run in order to survive.

Now Mosley has been picked out by Golden Boy Promotions to fight their guy Alvarez. The WBC gave Alvarez and Golden Boy the cover they needed by ranking Mosley at #3, even though Mosley hasn’t won a fight since January 2009. It’s pretty insane to see a fighter like Mosley get a #3 ranking by the WBC when he hasn’t even won a fight in three years.
