Canelo’s Experience Prevails Over Munguia’s Youth

Canelo Alvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) used his experience to defeat the younger and bigger Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) on Saturday night, knocking him down once, winning a 12 round unanimous decision in an entertaining fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Munguia’s Early Promise Fades

Munguia looked good tonight, but he was just getting hit with the cleaner, harder shots from Canelo. The 27-year-old Munguia started well, but it was all downhill after he was knocked down by Canelo in round four. Canelo dominated from there, winning by the scores 117-111, 116-111, and 115-112, which painted a picture of his dominance.

That knockdown took some of the confidence away from Munguia, and he struggled the remainder of the fight except for a couple of rounds. Munguia’s combination punching was good, but he didn’t have the mobility to use the follow the blueprint created by Dmitry Bivol on how to defeat Canelo.

After the fight, Canelo said he’d fight David Benavidez if he’s given the right kind of money, which he’s previously said is 150-200 million. It’s a lot of money obviously, that’s his asking price.

Canelo Talks Benavidez, But There’s a Price

“If the money is right, I can make the call. If the money is right, I can fight right now,” said Canelo during the post-fight interview when asked if he’d be willing to fight David Benavidez next. “I don’t give a s***. Yeah,” said Canelo when asked if it’s only a matter of money that’s keeping him from not fighting Benavidez.

It’s probably going to take the Saudis to come up with the money Canelo is asking for to fight Benavidez. Of course, it might not matter if Benavidez loses his fight in June.

“At this point, everybody is asking for everything. When I fought Lara, Miguel Cotto, Trout, Mayweather, Billy Joe Saunders and everybody. They say I’m not going to fight them, and I fought all of them. So right now, I can ask for whatever I want and I can do whatever I want and I’m Mexican,” said Canelo.
