Roger Mayweather: Whatever Cotto can do, Floyd can counter it

By Dan Ambrose: In the latest boxing news, Roger Mayweather took issue with with Shane Mosley recently saying that WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has a chance of beating his nephew Floyd Mayweather Jr. when the two fighters get it on in two weeks time at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada in an expensive $59.95 pay-per-view bout on HBO.

Roger doesn’t see Cotto as having any chance against Floyd in this fight, saying to Eastsideboxing.com’s On the Ropes Boxing Radio program “Anything Cotto can do my nephew [Mayweather] can counter that s***! It don’t make no difference about what Cotto can do!…He can’t do that s*** with my nephew.”

I think Roger knows what he’s talking about here, as he is an expert at what Floyd is or isn’t capable of doing. Roger has also seen plenty of Cotto’s previous fights and he has a pretty good idea of the kinds of fighters that Cotto can beat, and obviously Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn’t one of them.

Mosley was impressed with Cotto’s jab most of all, and he sees that as being a big reason why he thinks Cotto can pull off an upset next month by giving Floyd his first loss of his career. Mosley has big problems with Cotto’s jab in his loss to him in 2007. However, Mosley was already showing serious signs of wear even then, and he ended up getting out-boxed by Cotto in the first half of the fight before making it close with a furious late surge against a running Cotto, who was in survival mode at that time of the fight.

Mosley made the mistake of standing directly in front of Cotto and not attacking him in waves the way good fighters do against the Puerto Rican star. By the time Mosley had made the adjustments he needed to make, he had already given enough rounds where he needed to get some knockdowns to make up all those points.
