By Chris Williams: In a fight that arguably should have never been made in the first place, former IBF/WBA/WBC super flyweight champion Cristian Mijares (45-6-2, 21 KO’s) destroyed 34-year-old inexperienced Eddy Julio (13-4-1, 11 KO’s) by a 4th round KO on Saturday night to win the vacant WBC International Silver super bantamweight title at the Unidad Deportiva Centenario, Morelia, Michoacan de Ocampo, Mexico.

Mijares, 30, landed a big left hand to the head in the 4th round that sent Julio down flat on his back badly hurt on the canvas. The fight was immediately halted.

As good as the ending was, it wasn’t a big deal because it’s just wrong to put in a guy with so little experience against a former champion like Mijares. It doesn’t matter that Mijares has taken a few defeats in the past couple of years; it’s still wrong to put a novice in with a guy that still has world class skills like Mijares. That’s not sporting.

Mijares had Julio hurt in the 3rd round early when he hit Julio with a lead left at the start of the round that shock him up bad. Julio went to the ropes after getting hit and continued to gt hit with big shots. Mijares was teeing off on him with left hands as the round ended. It looked like he was golfing with his big wind-up shots.

The 1st and 2nd rounds were just as bad as the last two with Mijares hitting Julio at will with big punches. Julio didn’t win one round in the fight.

With this victory, Mijares will next be facing WBO super bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire on July 14th at the Cowboys stadium in Arlington, Texas as part of an HBO pay per view card that will likely have Juan Manuel Marquez fighting in the main event against possibly Brandon Rios.
