Image: Mayweather again uses Pacquiao to stay relevantBy John F. McKenna (McJack): Undefeated superstar WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (42-0, 26 KO’s) continues to use Filipino icon WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquaio (54-3-2, 38 KO’s) to stay relevant. With his fight against WBA light middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KO’s) less than a week and a half away, “Money” May is falling back on his old tried and true method of bringing the name of “Pacman” into the equation.

Whether he is preparing for one of his own fights, as he is now for his May 5 matchup against Cotto, or whether Manny is getting ready for a fight, Floyd never fails to use the his arch rival as a way to stay relevant with his boxing fans. Last November just prior to Manny’s bout with WBO/WBA lightweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KO’s) Floyd let it be known that he had reserved the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas for May 5 of this year for a bout with who he referred to only as “the little fella”.

Of course everyone assumed that “the little fella” was Manny Pacquiao. The media types immediately went into overdrive in their attempts to ascertain whether or not “the little fella” was in fact the “Pacman”.

Then in another attempt to keep his name out there Mayweather went on his Twitter account in january to twitter “Step up Punk!” to Pacquiao. In February Floyd tweeted “I’m fighting Miguel Cotto on May 5 because Miss Pacman is ducking me!”

Of course the reality is that Mayweather never intended to fight Pacquiao on May 5. The date and venue for a high profile fight is always negotiable. It is ludicrous to think that negotiations for a fight that could potentially draw upwards of $150 million in Pay Per View revenue alone would be done by getting on ones Twitter account. That simply is not how it’s done.

Miguel Cotto’s chances of defeating Floyd Mayweather Jr. are dismal at best. When watching him in training you begin to understand why “Money” hand picked him to be his next opponent. Floyd undoubtedly wants to keep the gravy train coming in by engaging fighters who have no chance against him while still maintaining the life style of the rich and famous. Most importantly Mayweather’s “0” is not in jeopardy.
