Image: Steward thinks Fury and Price will become heavyweight world champions somedayBy Scott Gilfoid: Trainer Emanuel Steward believes that UK heavyweights Tyson Fury (17-0, 12 KO’s) and David Price (12-0, 10 KO’s) have the goods to both become heavyweight world champions someday, likely after the Klitschko brothers are out of the future.

Steward likes what he sees in both fighters and sees the talent there that could lead to the fighters picking up world honors.
Steward told eastsideboxing.com’s On the Ropes Boxing Radio “There is a good chance he [Price] will be heavyweight champion of the world. I think he and Tyson Fury are both. He’s fundamentally I think better and more sound than Fury. Fury’s a big guy, but Fury is just mentally a very tough guy and that’s something I told you, I put a lot of value on that alone. But both of those guys should be heavyweight champions I think eventually.”

Well, I kind of disagree with Steward on his prediction of success for the two fighters. Here’s my take:

Tyson Fury: Tall, not much in the way of power or defense, and has a nasty habit of slapping with almost everything he throws. Gives up his height easily and tries to fight on the inside where he’s got only marginal skills and no power. His trainer hasn’t been able to wean him of this bad habit and eventually it’ll lead to him getting beat.

David Price: Stiff, fights like he’s nothing in the way of flexibility. He doesn’t possess any defensive skills whatsoever; no head movement, and no ability to block punches. Perhaps Price’s biggest flaw is his weak chin. In facing guys that can punch a little, Price tends to get his bell rung and get knocked out. He’ll do well as long as he’s matched against fighters that can punch their way out of a wet paper bag, but once you put him in with someone with even a hint of power, you may see Price topple over and get knocked cold. If Price does become a heavyweight champion, he’ll only last as long as there are soft punchers to defend against. If you put Price in with American talent Deontay Wilder or Chris Arreola, Price will be knocked out.
