Despite this being the second fight for the 31-year-old Soto at light welterweight, he’s been targeting lightweights for both of his fights.

It seems kind of pointless to move up in weight, yet fight nothing but lightweights. If Soto is using lightweights to get him ready to fight light welterweights, he’s making a huge mistake because when he does eventually fight for a title, he’s going to be in for a brutal shock. Soto went life and death with little lightweight Urbano Antillon last year in December 2010, and Antillon would be toyed with by the better light welterweights in the division. Soto is making a mistake in wasting time fighting at light welterweight but refusing to fight the genuine 140 pounders at that weight.

Soto is ranked at number #1 by the WBA, meaning he’ll get a crack at the World Boxing Association champion Marcos Maidana sooner or later. I think Maidana will destroy Soto when that time comes. He’s much bigger than Antillon and will be a nightmare opponent for the smaller 5’7″ Soto. If I was the management for Soto, I’d take the teething ring out of his mouth and start matching him against real light welterweights, because he’s going to be in for a world of hurt when he’s thrown in with one of the champions or top contenders. Ideally, Soto needs to move back down in weight. He’s too small for light welterweight and he’s showing no interest in fighting any of them anyway, so he might as well move back down where he could then fight lightweights without worry.
