Image: Hearn wants Khan for Kell Brook in 2012By William Mackay: Promoter Eddie Hearn is hoping Amir Khan will fight his guy Kell Brook next year when Khan moves up to the welterweight division and tries to campaign at that new weight.

Hearn told The Times “Khan is talking about moving up to welterweight next year and it would be a farce if he didn’t face Kell. Amir is a special talent and so is Kell, and that would be a very big fight.”

Hearn may have to wait a while for a Khan-Brook fight because Khan is likely to hunt lesser threats than Brook. He wants to capture a title and the only he appears capable of winning right now is the WBA welterweight title held by paper champion Vyacheslav Senchenko. Khan can likely beat Senchenko, but then again so could a lot of the top contenders. But if Khan were to fight the other welterweight world champions like Manny Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Andre Berto, he’ll get embarrassed. I see Khan as more of an interim champion rather than being capable of winning a real title at welterweight. But the beauty of the welterweight division, like a lot of the others, is that the sanctioning bodies basically have set it up to where there are three titles to be won for each alphabet sanctioning body.

In other words, the WBA has three titles that can be captured – the WBA regular title, WBA Super World title, and WBA interim title. The same goes for some of the other sanctioning bodies. Khan can easily pick up one of those titles without ever having to fight Brook, Berto, Pacquiao or Mayweather. This is why I hope Hearn doesn’t hold his breath waiting and hoping for Khan to fight his fighter Brook, because it may not happen anytime soon if ever.
