Glen Johnson has doubts whether Mayweather can beat Ortiz

By Jason Kim: Super middleweight contender Glen Johnson isn’t sure whether Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 KO’s has enough left in the tank at this point in his career to beat WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) on September 17th. Johnson points specifically to Mayweather’s recent fight against a shot Shane Mosley.

Mayweather struggled against Mosley and was badly hurt at one point in the 2nd round. Johnson didn’t like what he saw of Mayweather, and wonders whether he can still box. To be sure, Mayweather is no longer moving like he used to and is fighting more flat-footed. That’s not a good style to be fighting a big puncher/pressure fighter like Ortiz. If Mayweather stands in front of Ortiz he’s going to eat Mayweather alive with his high work rate.

“Floyd Mayweather didn’t look so good against Sugar Shane Mosley, and Sugar Shane Mosley proved in his last two fights after that fight, to have nothing to represent himself like Sugar Shane Mosley that he once was,” Johnson said in an interview at examiner.com. “So that puts a question mark in my mind where Mayweather is right now, and I haven’t seen him box in a while.”

Ortiz could be the one that makes Mayweather look his age in this fight if Mayweather is unable to move around the ring to try and escape Ortiz’s pressure. Mayweather can’t match Ortiz’s work rate because Mayweather is a pot shot fighter and don’t throw a lot of punches compared tot he much busier Ortiz. If Mayweather doesn’t hurt Ortiz, he’s going to have a long night of taking punishment from him. Mayweather could get lucky and stop Ortiz with a check hook or a short right hand. I doubt it though because if Andre Berto couldn’t do it, then I don’t think Mayweather will.
