Mayweather: I’m smarter and more disciplined than Ortiz

By Jason Kim: Undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t think WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz’s size advantage helping him in their fight next month.

Mayweather sees Ortiz’s extra size as a sign that he’s not responsible. Mayweather is likely to be out-weighed by at least 10 pounds maybe more by Ortiz.

However, Mayweather doesn’t seem the least concerned that he could be giving away considerable amount of weight, power and youth to the 24-year-old Ortiz.

Mayweather might want to be concerned because this could be a very hard fight, one that Mayweather hasn’t been in for a long time.

Here’s what Mayweather had to say about Ortiz in an interview at the Los Angeles times: “He’s bigger, but is [Ortiz] smarter, more disciplined fighter? I’m walking around at 150, like him. I’m responsible. I believe my speed remains, and we know everyone describes me as a defensive fighter. I’m not in this sport to take punishment…The layoff won’t hurt me.”
Mayweather hasn’t fought since last year when he defeated what many people think was a shot Shane Mosley. Mayweather didn’t react well when Mosley turned on the heat briefly in the 2nd round. Indeed, Mosley staggered Mayweather.

That was the only bit of offense from Mosley in the fight because he gassed out at that point and stood like a statue for the remainder of the fight.

Ortiz won’t be doing that. He’s going to be attacking Mayweather more than he’s been attacked in years and it’s going to take more than defensive skills for Mayweather to turn Ortiz away. He’s going to have to go toe to toe with him to beat Ortiz.

That’s going tough for Mayweather because Ortiz is a lot bigger and stronger than the guys Mayweather has been facing in the past four years and we could see an upset.
