The Weekend Action Reviewed: Khan-Molina, Groves-Johnson, Donaire-Arce, Wilder-Price

wilder23By Rusty Nate: Having watched the weekend’s events I thought I would put something to paper and just review the bouts as they happened.

I was present this weekend at the Excel event for George Groves’ next installment and what a great show it was regardless of the Burns fight being cancelled.

George Groves Vs Glen Johnson

This was a great fight. Groves really impressed me with his increased speed in this fight. He put together some great combinations and was able to handle Johnson in a better fashion than both Bute and Froch managed to. I am not saying Groves is at that level just yet but he is definitely moving in the right direction and it wont be long for him now I don’t think.

Groves needs a lot of improvement

YouTube video
By Scott Gilfoid: After watching Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves’ 12 round decision win over 43-year-old Glen Johnson (51-18-2, 35 KO’s) last night in London, I’m now doubting whether Groves can ever a world title. Groves is simply too wild for his own good and that just won’t do at the world class level. I don’t see him as a top fighter after this fight.

Groves seemed to have the same habit as Amir Khan of just throwing punches blindly in flurries that did little other than hit gloves and leave Groves wide open for counter shots. Groves doesn’t have a lot of power and it looked like he was hoping that the referee would just step in and halt the fight with Johnson still standing on his feet.

Groves’ performance against Johnson leaves a lot to be desired

By Scott Gilfoid: Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (16-0, 12 KO’s) should forget about trying to fight for a world title in 2013, because the way he looked tonight in defeating 43-year-old Glen Johnson (51-18-2, 35 KO’s) by a 12 round decision showed me that Groves isn’t ready for the likes of champions Arthur Abraham, Mikkel Kessler, Andre Ward and Carl Froch.

Glen Johnson: I’m not all that impressed with Groves; I hope the judges do their jobs correctly

groves4By Scott Gilfoid: 43-year-old former IBF light heavyweight champion Glen Johnson (51-17-2, 35 KO’s) will be coming out of retirement this Saturday night to fight unbeaten and highly hyped [by the British public] Commonwealth super middleweight champion George Groves (15-0, 12 KO’s) at the ExCel arena in London, England. Johnson said he hadn’t heard a lot about Groves before being selected for the fight, but after watching a few of his fights he’s not all that impressed with what he’s seen of him.

Johnson said “From what I’ve seen [of Groves] I’m not impressed as such…It’ll be up to the judges to do their job correctly.”

Johnson is considered an underdog for this fight because he’s lost 5 out of his last 7 fights, but one of the losses was a questionable one in his last fight against Andrzej Fonfara and the other defeats came against Carl Froch, Andre Ward, Lucian Bute and Tavoris Cloud, fighters that most boxing fans would consider much superior to Groves.

Image: George Groves hoping to shine against Glen Johnson this weekendBy Mark Havey: George Groves (15-0, KO’s 12) is one of Britain’s bright young prospects. His aggressive, all or nothing style thrills his many fans. His vulnerability but obvious talent puts you on the edge of your seat, leaving the impression that anything can happen.
