Pacquiao – Mayweather now within reach

By John F. McKenna (McJack): Promoters have been attempting to put together a Pacquiao – Mayweather matchup for over two years now with little success. Repeated efforts to iron out differences between the two superstars of boxing have repeatedly failed.

World Boxing Organization (WBO) Welterweight Champion Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO’s) and arguably the greatest defensive fighter of all time Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr (41-0, 25 KO’s) seemingly have a date with destiny, one would think. But for one reason or another the match boxing fans are anxious to see cannot be made.

Manny Pacquiao has the most explosive offense of any fighter to come along in decades and won fighter of the decade for the years covering 2000 through 2009. Manny has amazing hand speed and power. That speed and power caused Oscar De La Hoya to quit on his stool between rounds in 2008. Shane Mosley also wanted to quit when he felt Pacquiao’s power, but trainer Nazim Richardson would not hear of it.

“Money” Mayweather is undefeated and his defensive skill is equal to “Pacman’s” offensive skill. Floyd is very difficult for any fighter to pin down and seemingly has mastered every facet of his craft. Even those who are not thrilled with his behavior outside the ring concede that he is a defensive genius. Mayweather has the uncanny ability to study and adapt to his opponents style as a fight progresses. In addition Floyd never gets rattled and always retains his composure even in the heat of battle. This ability as a boxer has enabled him to win fights whose outcome hung in the balance.

It was reported in the Manila Standard Today that fight promoters are now saying that there is a glimmer of hope that the Mega Bucks fight between Pacquiao and Mayweather can be made. Negotiators are quietly working behind the scenes to determine when, where and how they will make the fight happen. There is way too much money for everyone involved to continue putting the fight off. There is always the possibility of some unforeseen event which will prevent the Pacquiao – Mayweather fight from ever becoming a reality.

A bulletin on the Pacquiao – Mayweather deal will be released after the Pacquiao – Marquez press conference in Manila this September.
