Calderon doesn’t plan on retiring

By Dan Ambrose: 36-year-old Ivan Calderon (34-2-1, 6 KO’s) still doesn’t think it’s time for him to retire yet despite getting taken out for the second consecutive time last Saturday night against WBO light flyweight champion Giovanni Segura (27-1-1, 23 KO’s) in a 3rd round stoppage at the Auditorio del Estado, Mexicali, Baja California, Mexico.

Calderon was never competitive in the fight and took shots from the moment the fight started until being taken out with a series of crushing body blows thrown by Segura in the 3rd. The good news for Calderon is that Segura is now moving up in weight, so he won’t have to worry about getting beaten up by him again.

Segura also stopped Calderon in the 8th round last year in August. Calderon thinks he can still be a factor in the light flyweight division. However, the chances of Calderon winning and holding down another title are pretty slim at this point. He doesn’t look powerful enough to beat champions like Roman Gonzalez, Gilberto Keb Baas, and Luis Lazarte.

Before getting wiped out in two consecutive fights by Segura, Calderon was already struggling against the likes of Hugo Fidel Cazares and Rodel Mayol. Those fights were marked by head clashes and Calderon failed to prove that he was better than either of those guys. The way the fights were going it appeared that Calderon would have lost to both Mayol and Cazares had the fights reached the finish line.

Perhaps the best chances for success for Calderon is if he moves back down to the minimumweight division and goes after one of the champions like Kazuto Ioka or Donnie Nietes.
