Calderon-Mayol II on September 12th

By Jason Kim: WBO light flyweight champion Ivan Calderon (32-0-1, 6 KO’s) will be making his 5th defense of his World Boxing Organization title on September 12th against the hard hitting Rodel Mayol (25-3-1, 19 KO’s) at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot, in Hato Rey, Puerto Rico. The two fighters met in a fight in June which ended in a 6th round technical draw after Calderon, 34, was cut on his forehead after a clash of heads with Mayol in the 4th round.

At the time of the stoppage, Mayol appeared to be in total command of the fight and was dominating the shorter 5’0″ Calderon. All throughout the bout, Calderon had been throwing few punches and mostly just diving in head first attempting to clinch Mayol. It looked as if Calderon was hoping to be the spoiler in the fight, keeping it close enough, by preventing Mayol from punching, so that Calderon could possibly squeak out a narrow 12 round decision.

Things weren’t working out well for the smaller Calderon, however, because even though Mayol was being grabbed in a clinch constantly by Calderon, he was still able to land more than enough punches in every round to win the rounds, at least on my card.

The fight was held in New York. The judges had it scored 58-56 for Calderon, 56-58 for Mayol and 57-57 even. I had Mayol winning every round of the fight quite easily and don’t know how Calderon, who was barely punching at all, could have won any of the rounds.

One hopes that Calderon doesn’t dive in with his head in the rematch, because the same outcome will likely result. I’ve noticed that Calderon has a nasty habit that he’s started developing in his last two fights against Hugo Fidel Cazares and Mayol. The Cazares fight, which took place in August 2008, likewise ended up in a technical draw due to a head butt, this one ending in the 7th round after Calderon dived in with his head and was cut.
