By Jorge Lugo: Beyond other forms of competition such as basketball, baseball, football, etc. Boxing is truly one of the only sanctuaries where a fighter speaks for himself. The question? Simple. You want respect? You want legacy? You go and get it. In what is an explanation of boxing in it’s most simplistic form, Ivan Calderon of Guaynabo PR, has done just that, and is definitely on his way to not only becoming another great legend in boxing but also, another great role model for the sport.

Nicknamed the “Iron Boy”, Calderon stands at a shocking but solid 5ft with a reach of 63″ inch. Having the southpaw stance, he is known for his accurate punching ability. Calderon a flyweight, had his last fight in June of this year against Rodel Mayol. This fight would stop in the 7th as Calderon was unable to continue due to a clash of heads. When the fight went to the scorecards, Calderon was awarded the decision.

It is the hope of many boxing fans that maybe one day he could go up in weight and continue to perform at top level with the other top rate fighters. However, Calderon has already made it clear that he feels flyweight is his weight and doesn’t see himself going up higher than that in any drastic manner.

However, as a fighter in his given division, he has to be recognized! His fights with the likes of Fidel Cazares, Nelson Dieppa, Juan Esquer were all great watches for me. His given boxing skill and speed alone is remarkable and in a world where the smaller guys are now getting there credit due, I strongly suggest you check into this remarkable fighter. His current record is 34 fights with 33 wins and 1 draw. In his amateur career, Calderon also defeated Miguel Cotto.

Outside the sport, Calderon is employed by the Department of Sports and Recreation and has been involved in several youth orientated charities. He lives in his hometown with his wife and two kids and seems pretty content on giving back to his native land as much as he can. If I had to describe boxing and what it stands for, Ivan Calderon would surely come to mind.
