Calderon defends his titles by dominating Iribe over 12!

By Sam Gregory: In the main event on the June 12th edition of Fox Sports Boxing from Madison Square Garden in New York City the undefeated undisputed junior flyweight champion of the world southpaw Ivan “Iron Boy” Calderon 34-0-1 with 6 KO’s defended his WBO and undisputed titles against Jesus Iribe 17-7-5 with 10 KO’s in a scheduled 12 round bout in the junior flyweight division.

At the opening bell both men fought in the center of the ring exchanging jabs; Calderon stayed on the outside using his jab to set up the left cross; Iribe followed Calderon using his jab but Calderon kept him out of range far enough to not be able to land anything solid.

By the second round Calderon began following up his jab with a left cross and uppercut; in an exchange of punches Calderon was caught and dropped with a right to the chin in the last 40 seconds of the round. Calderon appeared to not be hurt by the flash knockdown but it was still a 10-8 round for Iribe

At the start of round 3 Iribe came out fast and aggressively and had Calderon backing around the ring, Iribe was able to connect with his right until Calderon took control of the offensive flow of the fight and landed enough solid punches to win the round

In round 4 both men exchanged jabs in the center of the ring; they fought on the inside and there was a clash of heads at about 1:40 of the round; Calderon put three punch combination together and scored big. By the last few seconds of the round Iribe landed a big right hand but it was too little too late and Calderon had another big round

Round 5 Calderon seemed to bare down and follow up his jab with a strong combination that keep Iribe backing around the ring. Calderon was in complete control landing jabs followed up with solid combinations.

In round 6 both men traded from the center of the ring; Calderon moved to his right and landed a solid jab and left right combination. Even though Iribe looked to be the bigger man Calderon’s punches began to show there effect with bruising on the face of Iribe

Round 7 Calderon came out and landed big three and four punch combinations that kept Iribe moving back; Calderon threw and landed punches at will; Calderon had another big round

Round 8 Iribe seemed more aggressive going after Calderon but Calderon kept his distance and avoided just about every Iribe punch; Calderon threw a four punch combination that scored big. Iribe landed a right to the body; Calderon countered with a four punch combination

Round 9 Iribe came out the aggressor landing his jab followed with a three punch combination; Calderon tied up, punched out and began landing 3 and 4 punches combinations. At this point in the fight commentators were calling Calderon’s performance a “clinic” as he totally controlled the round and in fact the entire fight.

Round 10 Iribe was still game at this point going after Calderon throwing his jab but Calderon soon took control landing more 3 and 4 Punch combinations. Calderon was moving around the ring and landing punches clear and fresh like it was still early in the fight. Calderon finished the round with a strong 3 punch combination to the approval of the crowd.

Round 11 Iribe was throwing his jab and combinations most of which were avoided; midway through the round Iribe landed a punch, Calderon went down on what was called a slip. Iribe threw a missed with a big wild left hand; Calderon countered with a 3 and 4 punch combination to close out the round

Round 12 Iribe came out very aggressively chasing Calderon; Iribe was able to land a left hook to the body. Calderon clinched, punched out and landed a 3 punch combination. In the last 35 seconds of the round Calderon kept his distance avoiding punches as the crowd chanted his name until the closing bell of the fight.

After the 12th and final round the fight went to the judge’s scorecards: 188-109 on 2 cards and, 116-111 on the last card all for the winner by unanimous decision Ivan Calderon
