Image: Koncz says Pacquiao will fight Cotto or Margarito if the Mayweather contract doesn’t get signed in the next 10 daysBy Chris Williams: Michael Koncz, the personal adviser to Manny Pacquiao, had this to say in an article at ABC-CBN News: “If the contract is not signed in a week to 10 days we [Pacquiao] will move on to either Miguel [Cotto] or [Antonio] Margarito. But the better we think is Manny and Miguel.” Koncz is talking about if Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn’t sign the contract that was sent over to him by Pacquiao’s promoter from Top Rank Bob Arum.

Supposedly, all the points have been agreed upon by Pacquiao, Arum and Mayweather’s promotional company. However, the only one that’s been saying this is Arum, not Mayweather, and not Golden Boy Promotions, Msayweather’s promoters.

Dan Rafael of ESPN said that all the points haven’t been agreed to, which could be why isn’t readily signing the contract for the fight. If they haven’t been agreed upon, then it seems all the more weird that Arum said they had been. Perhaps Arum spoke to soon or he misjudged what Mayweather wanted in the contract.

Arum gave Mayweather a firm deadline of mid-July for him to agree to the fight with Pacquiao or else he would be taking Manny and moving on to fights against his other fighters from his Top Rank stable Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito.

What Koncz is saying is nothing more affirming what Arum has already said, that Pacquiao would be moving on to fight his other fighters. Arum says he still wants to fight Mayweather next year, hopefully in May, but who knows what will happen by then? Arum might look to match Pacquiao with Margarito or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., a potential rising star in Arum’s stable.

Yesterday, it was learned that Pacquiao could be continuing another three years with his boxing career, which mean that there’s less of a need for Pacquiao to fight Mayweather now or anytime soon. The reason is once Pacquiao fights Mayweather, there’s an excellent chance that Pacquiao will lose the fight and lose badly. Once he loses, it could have an effect on pay-per-view sales. This is why it’s probably not that important to fight Mayweather until Pacquiao is on the very verge of retirement where him losing badly won’t matter very much.

If Arum only pits Pacquiao up with fighters from his own stable, Pacquiao can easily continue to win for another three years before being matched up with Mayweather at that time. However, Arum will probably have to add some more fighters to his stable during that time because boxing fans might be sicked to see Pacquiao fight Cotto, Margarito and Chavez multiple times seemingly without end.
