Mayweather/Pacquiao: Who needs who?

Image: Mayweather/Pacquiao: Who needs who?By Shaun Campbell: Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather seem to have hit another inevitable snag in the negotiations for the much anticipated “super-fight”. Mayweather has reportedly said that Pacquiao will not get the 50/50 deal (a deal in which to me seems fair). After all both men are considered to be pound for pound kings, and both can attract a massive audience. Whether you like Floyd Mayweather or not, no one at this stage of his career will not buy one of his fights. Serious boxing fans will always purchase a mega fight, and a fight involving either Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather, is a mega-fight.

After everything seemed to be moving along smoothly, negotiations suddenly halted and now it seems as if no progress is being made. Personally, the average fan is becoming sick of hearing about the negotiations and is becoming increasingly frustrated at the possibility that the two icons will not face off.

But which fight needs this fight more? Does either fighter need it at all? Mayweather, a record of 41 wins, 0 defeats and 0 draws has cemented his place as one of the greatest of all time in any weight class, the self-confessed pretty boy, a man who is so rarely caught clean, that when a shot does land, the crowd are not fully aware of how he is going to take it. And then there’s Manny Pacquiao, with a record of 51 wins, 3 defeats, and 2 draws has confused experts as this rare phenomenon has carried his punch power up in weight, knocking out powerful boxers such as Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto.

There is no doubt who most of the fans side with. Pacquiao is the man should the fight not come off, who will walk away with the public still cheering him. Mayweather’s impressive career will probably be over-shadowed with not who he has fought, but who he has avoided to reach the top. But, when it’s all said and done, there will be something in the back of both fighters minds that wonder what might have been. I don’t believe that either fighter is scared of the other, so I don’t understand why the fight shouldn’t happen. Let’s hope one day it does.
