By Sam Gregory: After a 2 year hiatus from boxing Floyd Mayweather Jr makes his comeback in the welterweight division at a catch weight against Juan Manuel Marquez at the MGM Grand Casino, Las Vegas. Mayweather didn’t make the catch weight limit of 144 pounds that was agreed upon before the fight instead weighing in at 146 pounds to Marquez’ 142 pounds; the fight otherwise got off without a hitch; well beside the fact that Mayweather had to pay $600,000 in penalties to Marquez for not making weight.

Mayweather looked as fresh and sharp as he ever has in this one-sided bout against the undisputed lightweight champ. Marquez wasn’t able to land anything substantial against the very slick defense of Mayweather. It was clear from the opening bell that Mayweather was the bigger stronger man who landed his leaping left hooks at will.

mayweather45234In the 2nd round Mayweather landed a left uppercut that dropped Marquez hard but the very game Marquez beat the count.. As the fight wore on it became more and more apparent that Marquez was over-matched in this one-sided beat down by the former pound for pound king. It also became apparent that the “former” will soon be erased from that last statement. When Mayweather was caught flush by one of Marquez’ punches he just smiled and shrugged it off.

By the championship rounds it was obvious how over matched Marquez was sporting a cut over one eye while wearing the result of Mayweather’s quick right hand and left hook’s on his reddening face.

At the end of the 12th and final round the fight went to the judge’s scorecards: 118-109, 120-107 and 118-108 all for the winner by unanimous decision Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Mayweather improved his unbeaten record to 40-0 with 25 KO’s while Marquez fell to 50-5-1 with 37 KO’s.
