Floyd Mayweather Jr – has he regained the P4P crown

By Matthew Tunstall: This past Saturday night in Las Vegas Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather Jr put on a boxing clinic against one of the best boxers on the planet today in Juan Manuel Marquez. Mayweather totally dominated Marquez throughout the bout, knocking him down in the second round with a blistering left hook, to come away with a lopsided unanimous decision of 118-109, 120-107 and 119-108.

Not only did Mayweather win the bout with apparent ease he was never troubled. Many people will comment that Marquez was climbing two weight divisions and was at a huge disadvantage however this is a man that was ranked at number 2 in many experts P4P list after taking Manny Pacquaio to the wire and knocking out Joel Casamayor and Juan Diaz for the first time in their respective careers. This was by no means an easy match-up for Mayweather and he’s now made a huge statement with this victory.

mayweather3424523He controlled the bout from the opening bell with blazing hand speed and brilliant footwork. Many had questioned whether the 2 year retirement would have hindered Mayweather’s ability but he looked back to his beautiful best last night. The question still remains has Floyd Mayweather regained his P4P crown after this performance? An argument can be made either way.

Some may feel Mayweather’s dazzling performance last night will have re-installed him as the P4P number 1. He made light work of an excellent fighter in Marquez making the Mexican Warrior look ordinary. Let’s remember that Manny Pacquiao struggled in two bouts with Marquez finishing with a draw and a controversial split decision victory.

On the other side of the fence others feel that Mayweather has cherry-picked Marquez as an opponent knowing that he would have numerous advantages within the fight. Even though Mayweather destroyed Marquez he didn’t make as short work of Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya as Manny Pacquaio did.

Whatever the case a strong argument can be made for either Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquaio being the P4P king. Each fighter can point to brilliant victories over quality adversaries.

In order for Floyd Mayweather Jr to cement his spot as boxing’s number 1 and to be considered as a great in the sport’s history I believe he needs to prove himself against other fighters in and around the welterweight division. ‘Sugar’ Shane Mosley last night called Mayweather out in the post-fight interview with the support of Bernard ‘The Executioner’ Hopkins. No doubt the winner of Miguel Cotto v Manny Pacquaio will call out Mayweather too. I do believe that if Mayweather was to fight Mosley and the winner of Cotto v Pacquaio scoring victories in each bout he would without doubt claim the P4P crown and a place as one of boxing’s greatest ever fighters.
