Why did Pacquiao fight Cotto Rather than Fight Mosley?

By Manuel Perez: Why did Manny Pacquiao choose Miguel Cotto to fight rather than World Boxing Association welterweight Shane Mosley instead? I don’t know but maybe it’s me or something but I got the impression that Cotto had been experiencing some tough times in the ring since running into the Mexican Antonio Margarito last year in losing by an 11th round TKO.

Cotto only looked shades better in his most recent fight with Johsua Clottey, looking at point as if he were ready to quit against Clottey. Cotto ended up winning the fight, albeit by a narrow 12 round split decision, but he looked far from impressive an very, very beatable.

pac457657So, Cotto looked awful in that fight and probably was lucky to get the win. Cotto had been destroyed recently by Margarito and hasn’t looked like the same fighter since then. In contrast, Mosley looked sensational defeating Margarito by a 9th round stoppage in January, winning every round of the fight.

Since Margarito was considered to be the best fighter in the welterweight division at that time due to his win over Cotto the previous year, why wouldn’t Pacquiao be showing interest in fighting Mosley instead of Cotto?

Why not fight Mosley? That is really weird, don’t you think? I smell fear, I hate to say. Why fight Cotto if he was destroyed by Margarito and barely beat Clottey? Why fight Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton if you’re trying to prove that you’re the best in the welterweight division?

Seems logical to me that Pacquiao should have gone after Margarito, Paul Williams or better yet Shane Mosley if he was trying to prove something rather than a shot, 36-year-old De La Hoya or a one dimensional Ricky Hatton. Why take those fights? That seems like some cherry picking to me.
