Image: Sexton needs to take Price to the later rounds to beat himBy William Mackay: For former Commonwealth heavyweight champion Sam Sexton (15-2, 6 KO’s) to have a chance at beating the towering, hard hitting 6’8″ David Price (12-0, 10 KO’s) in their May 19th fight for the vacant British heavyweight title, the 27-year-old Sexton will need to take Price to the later rounds to try and drown him at the Aintree Equestrian Centre, in Liverpool, UK.

Sexton, 6’2″, knows what he’s up against in the Price bout because he realizes that Price has been knocking out most of his opponents within the first two or three rounds in the majority of his fights. The longest fight that Price has had since he turned pro in 2009 was a bout that made it to the 7th in a fight against Raman Sukhaterin in October 2010. That was a one-sided fight with Sukhaterin taking a lot of big head shots.

Sexton can’t afford to get hit solid like that for seven rounds, let alone for the entire 12. Sexton has to keep his jab working and let his hands go with hard powers shots. Price isn’t invincible, as we’ve seen in the amateur ranks when he was stopped a couple of times by big hitters. But the keep is you have to take the fight to Price and hit him hard. His chin is definitely vulnerable if he gets hit with solid shots.

Sexton told Livefight.com “Price would be more dangerous in the early rounds as he’s never really boxed the distance in a long fight. I will just make sure I’m ready for the short or the long fight.”

Price is going to try and make it a short fight by unloading on Sexton with everything he has in the first three rounds. That can be an advantage for Sexton, because he knows what to expect from Price and he can set a trap for him on May 19th by being ready to unload with some of his own big shots when Price comes looking to land something big. Price hasn’t fought any counter punchers. His opposition has been pretty mediocre with him facing weak punchers without any speed or technique. Sexton is a huge leap up from the guys that Price has been spoon fed by his promoter.
