Mayweather will be fighting WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KO’s) on May 5th, and after that Mayweather may target former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez for a mega fight against the 37-year-old star of the middleweight division.

Mayweather Jr. told the Boxingsocialist.com “I can’t rule out the future, you know down the line I may want to make that jump and fight at middleweight, you just never know. I just want to give the fans exciting fights and if Martinez is the guy at that time then we shall see.”

There it is. Mayweather aiming at Sergio Martinez for a big fight. Martinez has called out Pacquiao over and over again without any luck whatsoever in trying to get the Filipino star to agree to fight him. However, Mayweather Jr. appears more than ready to take the challenge by going after the fighter that most boxing fans and writers see as the premier middleweight at 160. Mayweather has to get by Cotto at 154 first, however, and that could be a real test for Mayweather because Cotto can punch and has sound technical skills.

This isn’t the same limited Cotto that was beaten by Pacquiao in 2009 nor the same Cotto that Antonio Margarito was able to chop down in their July 2008 fight. Cotto is more of a boxer/puncher now that uses a lot of movement and jabs to beat his opponents. Cotto still looks to punch out his opponents but only after he outboxes them.

Cotto has power and he could give Mayweather Jr. problems if he’s able to establish his jab and put pressure on him.
