Price must KO Thompson if he wants to be taken seriously

price111By Thomas Cowan: British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion takes another step towards a world title challenge when he faces American veteran Tony Thompson on Saturday. Price has a 15-0 record, with 13 of his wins coming by way of knockout but he needs to be fighting more rounds if he is going to be ready to challenge for a title.

The 6ft 8in giant hasn’t really got anything out of his last few fights because the likes of Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton clearly didn’t belong in the same ring as him.

Price feels that 41-year-old Thompson is the man to correct this problem. He told British newspaper Daily Mail, “I ought to get rounds off a fighter of Tony Thompson’s calibre. He’s gone 17 rounds with Wladimir Klitschko who’s the best in the world. I’ll be prepared for rounds – that’s for sure – he’s going to ask questions of me.”

Fury starts silly rumor about Price-Thompson fight being off

fury5445By Scott Gilfoid: Heavyweight Tyson Fury must be laughing today about the bogus rumor he started on his twitter about the Tony Thompson vs. David Price fight being off for February 23rd. It now turns out Fury was just flapping his gums without any knowledge at all, and sadly some boxing sites reported it as news. It’s so, so sad.

Tyson Fury this on this twitter: “Team Price offered Richard towers the fight instead of tompson! Official. U all herd it hear first price vs Thompson off!!! & they keeping it on the low low to sell more tickets off tompsons name !!!!! If y’all don’t be leave me ask @FrankMaloney ?????????”

Tony Thompson wants to ruin David Price’s title hopes

price111By Scott Gilfoid: 6’5” American heavyweight Tony Thompson wants to destroy the unbeaten British heavyweight David Price’s big world title hopes when they meet up on February 23rd at the Echo Arena in Liverpool, England. Thompson, 41, knows he’s got a fighter without experience with a history of being vulnerable when getting hit with hard shots to the head, and he’s going to really put it on the 6’8” Price to take him out in front of his own Liverpool fans.

Thompson said “He [Maloney] has made a major mistake in bringing me over because I lost my last fight [against Wladimir Klitschko].”

It’s very true what Thompson says. Maloney obviously saw vulnerability with Thompson in getting drilled out by Wladimir, and he no doubt saw how he was offering up precious little in terms of offense against the 6’6” Wladimir with return fire.

Maloney explains his rationale for matching David Price against 40-year-olds

price34By Scott Gilfoid: Frank Maloney, the promoter for unbeaten British and Commonwealth heavyweight champion David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s), came up with a weird rationale for explaining why he keeps matching the soon to be 30-year-old Price against 40-year-old fighters despite the fact that Price is an ex 2008 Olympian and that he should be fighting much, much better opposition at his age.

Maloney said to Steve Bunce at espn.co.uk “They say he’s [Price] facing a 40-year-old. [Tony Thompson]. I’d ask anyone to go in the ratings and find an American heavyweight in the top 10 that’s not 40-years-old. Other than David Price and Tyson Fury, there are no American heavyweight under 40 in the top 10.

Price vs. Thompson: David moving slowly upwards

price5By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten heavyweight contender David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) is now an actual contender and moving forward to an eventual title shot at some point in his career. Price, #8 IBF, #14 WBO, who be fighting 41-year-old Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) in two weeks on February 23rd in a fight that will mark the third fight in a row whether the 29-year-old former 2008 Olympian Price faces a fighter in his 40s.

I’m not quite sure if Price’s promoter Frank Maloney has deliberately targeted 40-year-olds for Price or if it just happened this way on accident, but whatever the reason, it’s pretty disappointing given Price’s age.

Price vs. Thompson: Tony has the size but he’s missing the power

price2345By Scott Gilfoid: If you break down the qualities that are needed to defeat unbeaten British heavyweight David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s), you would probably need a heavyweight with good power like Roberto Cammarelle, good size like Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s), and good hand speed like Deontay Wilder.

Unfortunately for the 41-year-old Thompson, he only has good size at 6’5”. He’s got one thing going for him, but he’s missing the power and speed needed to KO Price the way that Cammarelle did in the 2008 Olympics.

I’m not saying that Thompson doesn’t have a chance because he’s got a chance because Price’s chin is fragile, and he could go at any moment if he’s hit hard by Thompson. But I don’t really rate Thompson as being any kind of puncher because he just doesn’t have much power. I mean, he can knock you out but that only happens when he’s been slapping his opponent for around for three or four rounds without stop.

David Price: Tony Thompson is a massive step up for me

price4323By Scott Gilfoid: David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) believes his February 23rd fight against 41-year-old Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) is a huge step up for him in class despite the fact that Thompson looked old and shot in his last fight against Wladimir Klitschko last July.

Thompson was blown out in that fight in the 6th round, and I can’t remember him ever landing anything other than a few slaps. It was a really, really weak effort from Thompson and he looked he’d aged 20 years since his loss to Wladimir in 2008.

David Price figures he’s five fights away from a world title shot

price23By Scott Gilfoid: 29-year-old heavyweight David Price doesn’t see any need to rush into a fight against one of the Klitschko brothers. He prefers to take his time before getting that shot, and he’s talking about five fights and about one year away. It just happens to work out to where Price will be ready right about when the Klitschkos are ready to retire. I guess it’s just a coincidence that the timing of him finally stepping it up will be right about when they’re either retired or too old.

Price said to the bbc.co.uk “Without a doubt I’ll be fighting for a world title in five fights…To be fighting someone who fought for a world title only five months ago, it’s a massive step up in class…If I can do a cleaner job than Klitschko did on him that will send a message out.”

David Price Stepping in the Right Direction

price2By Michael Byrne: David Price (15-0, 13 KO’s) will meet Tony Thompson (36-3, 24 KO’s) in the Echo Arena on February 23rd. It would seem Price’s promoter, Frank Maloney, is finally willing to put his prize possession in a big fight.

Price finally met with a ‘decent’ record in mid-2011 when he was put in with late replacement Tom Dallas, who was 15-0 at the time, but Dallas had never fought anyone of note, either. After putting him away in 2 rounds, Price has stayed with domestic level fighters in John McDermott, Sam Sexton, Audley Harrison, and Matt Skelton. These four lasted a grand total of 7 rounds against the very heavy-handed Price.
