Figueroa not happy with Burns’ rabbit punches

Omar Figueroa vs Ricky BurnsBy Scott Gilfoid: Former WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa (25-0-1, 18 KOs) got the job done last Saturday in beating Scotland’s Ricky Burns (37-5-1, 11 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision, but he took a lot of punches to the back of the head all night long from the 32-year-old Burns in their fight at the State Farm Arena, in Hidalgo, Texas, USA.

Figueroa said he paid Burns back by hitting him in the back of his head from time to time, but it still ended up to be a grueling fight for him. Figueroa got the decision by the scores of 116-110, 116-110 and 117-109.

Ricky Burns vs. Omar Figueroa in Hidalgo, Texas on May 9th

burns453By Scott Gilfoid: The May 9th fight between former WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa (24-0-1, 18 KOs) and former two division world champion Ricky Burns (37-4-1, 11 KOs) will be taking place at the State Farm Arena, in Hidalgo, Texas, USA. No titles will be on the line for the fight. Figueroa is now the WBC lightweight Champion in Recess.

It was already known that the fight would take place in Houston, but the actual venue was still undecided until today. This is really a do-or-die fight for Burns, as he’s lost two out of his last three fights in the last two years. Burns will be turning 32 on April 13th, and he’s obviously not getting any younger.

Ricky Burns – A Throwback

burns4545By Frainy: Boxers all over the world are heavily criticized for being inactive, for shying away from fights or for hand-picking opponents in order to preserve their reputation. Indeed, gone are the days of the top fighters or indeed any fighters fighting over 100 fights in their career.

The sport has become far too physically demanding for this to be possible as well as TV deals and money grabbing promoters heavily influencing the career choices made by those in the upper echelons of the sport.

Ricky Burns excited about Omar Figueroa clash on 5/9 in San Antonio, TX

burns4534By Scott Gilfoid: After having lost two out of his last three fights, former two division world champion Ricky Burns (37-4-1, 11 KOs) is getting another chance to prove himself as still being a relevant fighter when he faces former WBC lightweight strap holder Omar Figueroa Jr (24-0-1, 18 KOs) on May 9th at a still to be determined venue in San Antonio, Texas.

Burns, 31, is pretty excited about this fight, as he sees it as an opportunity to rejuvenate his sagging career. Burns is hoping he can beat the 25-year-old Figueroa to get back into the thick of things at 135.

Ricky Burns vs. Omar Figueroa possible for the spring

burns453By Scott Gilfoid: Former two division world champion Ricky Burns (37-4-1, 11 KOs) has been talking a lot lately about a big announcement coming for his next fight. Supposedly, Burns was supposed to be fighting a big-named opponent. Well, it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.

Instead of Burns facing a big name, it looks like he’s going to be fighting former WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa (24-0, 18 KOs), a fighter who some boxing fans saw as a paper champion before he was stripped of his title last November due to an injury he sustained in his harder than expected fight against Daniel Estrada last August.

Burns, who increasingly has looked like a shot fighter in his last three fights, will be fighting the vacant WBC International lightweight title against the 30-year-old Zlaticanin.

Figueroa defeats Belmontes

Omar Figueroa vs Jerry Belmontes(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Jim Dower: In an dull fight, WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa (23-0-1, 17 KO’s) retained his WBC title with a 12 round split decision win over a spoiling challenger Jerry Belmontes (19-4, 5 KO’s) on Saturday night at the Stubhub Center in Carson, California. The final judges scores were 118-110 and 116-112 for Figueroa, and 115-113 for Belmontes.

Belmontes would have won the fight had he let his hands go, but after the 6th round, Belmontes started moving constantly and keeping on the outside in a prolonged keep away. It’s hard to understand what Belmontes was thinking about because he could have won this fight had he kept mixing it up with Figueroa, as he was landing the cleaner shots.
