Schaefer working on Thurman, Matthysse, & Figueroa tripleheader on April 26th on Showtime

matthysse559By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer is working on a huge fight card on April 26th on Showtime with WBA interim welterweight champion Keith Thurman (22-0, 20 KO’s), Lucas Matthysse (34-3, 32 KO’s) and WBC lightweight champion Omar Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KO’s) in separate fights on the network. It sounds like a potentially good card except that Matthysse’s opponent could be lightweight John Molina.

That’s not a good match-up because Matthysse is bigger and stronger than Molina. That would be halfway decent opponent for Figueroa, because he’s a lightweight at least. If Golden Boy is matching Matthysse with Molina, then it’s quite possible that Thurman and Figueroa will be facing opposition that are less than impressive as well.

Broner stripped of WBC 135 lb. title; Omar Figueroa the new champion

007 Broner IMG_3945(Photo credit: Tom Casino/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: The WBC has finally decided to strip Adrien Broner of his WBC lightweight title due to him failing to defend it since February of 2013 when he beat Gavin Rees. With Broner now showing any signs that he plans on defending the title the WBC chose to strip him of the belt. But here’s the strange part: Instead of letting the #1 WBC contender Daniel Estrada fight for the vacant belt against the interim WBA lightweight champion Omar Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KO’s), the WBC decided to give the title belt to Figueroa outside of the ring.

That makes things really easy for Figueroa because he didn’t have to take any risky fights to get the title belt. After the war that Figueroa had in his last fight against Nihito Arakawa in July of last year, I bet Figueroa is happy he doesn’t have to fight for the title because there’s no telling how he’d have done if he had to fight anyone good right now and fight another war.

Arakawa makes a name for himself in loss to Omar Figueroa

arakawa1By Dan Ambrose: Nihito Arakawa (24-3-1, 16 KO’s) may have lost the fight last night to Omar Figueroa (22-0-1, 17 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision, but he definitely won the event as he showed a ton of courage in battling the younger, stronger and also the heavier 23-year-old Figueroa in their fight at the AT&T Center, in San Antonio, Texas, USA.

The judges gave Figueroa the decision by the scores 119-107, 118-108 and 118-108.

Arakawa was down in rounds two and six and it might have seemed to Figueroa that he had the fight in the bag early on. But Arakawa had no quit in him and he just throwing nonstop punches for the entire fight.
