Saul Alvarez confirmed for May 4th in Las Vegas

alvarez346By Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0, 30 KO’s) has been confirmed to be fighting on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. HBO televised pay per view card on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Canelo still doesn’t have an opponent for that date but Golden Boy Promotions are looking at Austin Trout, James Kirkland and Alfredo Angulo to face him. It would be a huge surprise if Canelo ends up facing Trout. It’s not likely to happen because Trout is too good and brings a lot of the same ability to the ring that Floyd Mayweather Jr. would bring if he were to fight Canelo. I don’t think Trout is as Mayweather, but he’s like a Mayweather-lite in my estimation and that’s probably more than good enough to beat the flat-footed, stamina plagued Canelo.

Golovkin would present problems for Canelo Alvarez

golovkin5By Dan Ambrose: If Golden Boy Promotions are willing to take a risk for their fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) then they might want to consider putting him in with WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Gokovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) to see what Canelo is made of.

Last night, Golovkin chased a reluctant Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s) around the ring for seven rounds, leaving him a bloody and battered fighter by the time his training team threw in the towel. And that was with Rosado running for entire fight.

Don’t be surprised if Canelo faces Alfredo Angulo on May 4th

canelo 05By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions wants WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) to fight on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. pay per view undercard on May 4th. There’s still no word about whether they’re going to be able to get the young 22-year-old because he reportedly wants a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 14th as part of the condition for him to fight on May 4th.

If Golden Boy can get an agreement from Mayweather to face Canelo in September then we’ll be seeing him on the Mayweather undercard on May 4th, but it might not be against the guy that boxing fans want to see him fight in WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout. Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy already said Trout hadn’t done enough to deserve the Alvarez fight yet.

Will Canelo still get the Mayweather fight if he loses to Trout?

alvarez56By Allan Fox: There’s a possibility WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be fighting on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to reports, Canelo will on the card if he can get Mayweather Jr. in September. Canelo could end up fighting WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout, and then moving forward to fight Mayweather on September 14th.

So the deal would be that Canelo fights on the May 4th card then he gets the Mayweather fight in return. What’s not known is whether Canelo would still get the Mayweather fight in September even if he gets beaten by Trout or whoever Golden Boy Promotions digs up for him to fight on that date.

Do boxing fans care if Canelo faces a weak opponent on May 4th to get the Mayweather fight in September?

alvarez8By Dan Ambrose: The word is that WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will likely fight on the May 4th Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight card as part of a deal to get a fight against Mayweather on September 14th. What’s unknown at this point is who Alvarez’s promoters at Golden Boy will match him against for the May 4th date.

While hardcore boxing fans overwhelmingly want to see Canelo finally prove that he’s not just hype by taking on WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout in a unification bout, it’s very possible that Golden Boy will protect what Trout refers to as their “Golden Goose” by matching Canelo against another weak opponent.

Austin Trout: I haven’t been contacted for Saul Alvarez fight

trout35By Dan Ambrose: In a sign that Golden Boy Promotions might be looking elsewhere for easier marks for their Golden One, WBA World junior middleweight Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) says he hasn’t even been contacted by the promoters of WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) for a fight on May 4th. Trout says he’s hoping they’ll contact him about the fight but he’s not going to just sit around waiting.

Trout said to ESPN.com “You’re going to have to ask Oscar De La Hoya and Canelo because Team Trout is ready and waiting on the call to say Canelo is ready to do it as well. If it doesn’t happen, we’re not going to wait though. Sooner or later he [Canelo] is going to have to fight me. I’m a champion. I’m going to take the other belts that are not his belt, and there will be nothing left to do but to get in and fight.

Golden Boy are showing a consistency in protecting their fighters

alvarez43By Dominic Sauboorah: Golden Boy Promotions is arguably the biggest boxing promotional company in the world; however they seem to be protecting a lot of their “well known” fighters, whereby they haven’t been fighting top contenders or world champions but instead fringe contenders who have been served up on a silver platter.

Saul Alvarez is a perfect example. Golden Boy rate him as one of the best pound for pound, but his resume is absolutely appalling. He’s fought welterweights Matthew Hatton, Josesito Lopez and Alfonso Gomez when he’s defending a 154 belt, and the only real legit contender he’s fought that’s natural at his weight is Ryan Rhodes, who’s nothing more than a European level fighter. The fact that this guy’s calling Mayweather out is a disgrace and the fact that he holds one of the most prestigious boxing belts in the world is a disgrace.
