Golovkin would present problems for Canelo Alvarez

golovkin5By Dan Ambrose: If Golden Boy Promotions are willing to take a risk for their fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) then they might want to consider putting him in with WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Gokovkin (25-0, 22 KO’s) to see what Canelo is made of.

Last night, Golovkin chased a reluctant Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KO’s) around the ring for seven rounds, leaving him a bloody and battered fighter by the time his training team threw in the towel. And that was with Rosado running for entire fight.

Some boxing fans think that because Rosado was able to survive by running against Golovkin it means that Kazakhstan fighter is vulnerable and there to be taken. So would Golden Boy be willing to put their guy Canelo in with Golovkin to see how good Canelo is or do they want to continue to match Canelo with welterweights?

There really isn’t much of a size difference between the 5’10’ Golovkin and the 5’9” Canelo. The two fighters are identical in size. The only difference I can see is Golovkin fights middleweights, whereas Canelo fights welterweights.

I’d see how Canelo would do against Golovkin and I’d definitely favor Golovkin in that fight because he’s much harder to hit. I think he’d do every well against an opponent that comes right at him the way that Canelo no doubt would. We could see another Golovkin vs. Grzegorz Proksa type of a fight with Canelo getting dropped repeatedly by Golovkin.

It’s too bad Golden Boy would likely never allow Canelo to take this fight considering it would be a very good fight. At the very least boxing fans would finally get a good idea of how good Canelo is. If he gets blown out by Golovkin, then fans could conclude that Canelo was just hype and someone that found success based on his fights against smaller guys.
