Don’t be surprised if Canelo faces Alfredo Angulo on May 4th

canelo 05By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions wants WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) to fight on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. pay per view undercard on May 4th. There’s still no word about whether they’re going to be able to get the young 22-year-old because he reportedly wants a fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. on September 14th as part of the condition for him to fight on May 4th.

If Golden Boy can get an agreement from Mayweather to face Canelo in September then we’ll be seeing him on the Mayweather undercard on May 4th, but it might not be against the guy that boxing fans want to see him fight in WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout. Richard Schaefer of Golden Boy already said Trout hadn’t done enough to deserve the Alvarez fight yet.

In that case we could see Canelo facing one of Golden Boy’s fighters at 154 like Alfredo Angulo (22-2, 18 KO’s). In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if that’s exactly who ends up fighting Canelo. Angulo is Mexican and it might interest more Mexican fans to see Canelo fighting another Mexican fighter than Trout, who comes from America.

Matching Canelo with Angulo will be a much more safer fight for Canelo than if Golden Boy puts their young star against Trout because Angulo is incredibly slow of hand and foot, and he’s already been exposed by James Kirkland and Kermit Cintron.

Angulo isn’t much of a threat to beating Canelo, so Golden Boy will be able to relax without worry that nothing will happen to their young star before he gets his big payday against Mayweather. It would be better no doubt for Canelo to fight Trout because then Canelo could prove himself to the hardcore boxing fans that he’s not just a pampered fighter that’s gotten where he is today because of careful match-making by Golden Boy.

I don’t see Golden Boy being willing to take that risk in putting Canelo with Trout because of the possibility he might lose before Golden Boy has had the chance to put Canelo in with Mayweather.

The only other guys around that weight class that Golden Boy has is Kirkland and Angulo, and I doubt Kirkland will get the fight because he hasn’t been busy. That doesn’t mean he won’t, but I don’t think he will. I see Angulo as having a good chance of getting the fight simply because of him being a Golden Boy fighter in addition to his recent problems in the ring.

Angulo looked terrible in his last fight against welterweight Jorge Silva. There was no improvement in Angulo’s game despite him now being trained by Virgil Hunter. In other words, Angulo is perfect for Canelo.
