Will Canelo still get the Mayweather fight if he loses to Trout?

alvarez56By Allan Fox: There’s a possibility WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will be fighting on May 4th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. According to reports, Canelo will on the card if he can get Mayweather Jr. in September. Canelo could end up fighting WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout, and then moving forward to fight Mayweather on September 14th.

So the deal would be that Canelo fights on the May 4th card then he gets the Mayweather fight in return. What’s not known is whether Canelo would still get the Mayweather fight in September even if he gets beaten by Trout or whoever Golden Boy Promotions digs up for him to fight on that date.

Picture for a second how Canelo and Golden Boy will look if Canelo loses to Trout, but then he still gets to fight Mayweather in September. Talk about a disaster. It would not only seem unfair because the guy that should be getting the Mayweather fight in that case would be Trout, but it also would send a message that it’s not about winning; it’s about making the deal.

For Canelo’s sake, I hope he beats Trout if Golden Boy can give him a guarantee that he’ll be able to fight Mayweather in September because if he loses to Trout, it’s going to make him look bad if he tries to move and still get the Mayweather fight anyway. Some boxing fans see Canelo as a pampered, protected fighter because of all the welterweights that he’s faced during his time as a junior middleweight.

They think Golden Boy has purposely matched him against smaller guys so that they can build a pay per view star. Canelo has bad luck in that his fights with Paul Williams, James Kirkland and Miguel Cotto didn’t happen because of a variety of factors. However, there were many instances were Canelo still should have been matched against better opposition but Golden Boy still chose to put him in with smaller, older fighters rather than the best junior middleweights.

If Canelo loses to Trout or whoever is selected for his next fight, then I’m hoping that Canelo will chose to try and fight that guy again rather than pushing for the Mayweather fight. If he’s been given a guarantee to fight Mayweather win or lose then it’s going to hurt him if he does fight Mayweather because he won’t be going into the fight under the best of circumstances and it likely won’t do as well financially compared to if he wins his next fight.
