Cotto vs. Saul Alvarez: Is there still a demand for this fight?

cotto444By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer has been pretty transparent about his noninterest in matching WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo”Alvarez against arguably the best fighter in the 154 pound division in WBA champion Austin Trout. Schaefer is talking about wanting to get a big fight for Canelo for his next fight in March or May.

However, there are no big fights out there for Canelo at 154 unless he’s thinking about still matching Canelo with the recently beaten Miguel Cotto. Schaefer is talking as if Canelo’s next opponent will be someone with a big enough name to make the May 4th fight card, headlined by Floyd Mayweather Jr, a highly successful one.

Schaefer: Canelo likely won’t face Trout next; I know what fans want

alvarez3 - CopyBy Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer once again said WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout won’t be fighting his guy WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez next. Schaefer isn’t ruling Trout out entirely for Canelo’s next bout but he is saying it’s not likely to happen.

Schaefer said to maxboxing.com “I really don’t think it’s going to be Austin Trout…I know what fight fans want to see, so I’m going to deliver that fight.”

Okay, no Trout for Canelo. Does that mean Schaefer will pick out another struggling welterweight for Canelo to fight? Canelo recently fought 41-year-old Shane Mosley, who hadn’t won a fight since 2009.

De La Hoya hints of a Canelo-Mayweather fight coming up

alvarez343By Dan Ambrose: Oscar de La Hoya of Golden Boy Promotions is dropping a pretty big hint that he thinks he can set up a huge mega fight between his fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) and unbeaten WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. (43-0, 26 KO’s) on either May 4th or September 14th.

Mayweather Jr. scheduled himself to fight on both of those days, and then Golden Boy did the same with Alvarez, no doubt hoping they can somehow convince Mayweather Jr. to fight their guy Canelo. I don’t know if they’ll succeed but it looks Golden Boy are trying their hardest to make that happen. I can’t think of a more undeserving fighter to get a Mayweather fight than Canelo Alvarez. The guy hasn’t fought Austin Trout or anyone else of quality, he’s fight welterweight despite being the junior middleweight champion, and yet he wants Mayweather.

Rosado: A win over Golovkin could get me Canelo, Sergio Martinez or Chavez Jr

gggrosado120112By Eric Thomas: Junior middleweight contender Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) hasn’t even fought WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) , yet he’s already looking past him towards big fights that he feels a win over Golovkin will lead to in the near future.

Rosado and Golovkin will be fighting this month on January 19th at Madison Square Garden in New York. Rosado is a big underdog in this fight, and he’s going to have to find a way to show that the betting crowd is wrong by not giving him much of a shot to win this fight.

Will Saul Alvarez face Angulo, Maidana or Kirkland next?

alvarez434By Dan Ambrose: It’s looking like WBC junior middleweight champion Sail “Canelo” Alvarez won’t be facing WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout next judging by the comments Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer made to Sports Illustrated writer Chris Mannix this past week on twitter.

It’s unclear whether Alvarez will be fighting on May 4th, the Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo or if he’ll be back in the ring in March against a still to be determined opponent. What does seem pretty obvious is that Alvarez won’t be facing the guy he arguably should be fighting in Austin Trout.

Saul Alvarez’s next opponent to be revealed within 2 weeks

alvarez3By Dan Ambrose: Eddy Reynoso, the manager for unbeaten WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s), says that Alvarez’s next opponent should be known within in the next 15 days or so for his possible bout on May 4th on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather fight on HBO pay per view. However, the fight might not take place then as they’re also considering having him fight in March instead of May.

Reynoso said to the record.com.mx “Anything can happen. Mayweather says he will fight Robert Guerrero, Austin Trout brings legal problems in the United States. The fight could be advanced to March, so that the champion [Alvarez] can be back into action as soon as possible, possibly against a lower level [opponent].”

Will Saul Alvarez be fighting a welterweight on May 4th?

alvarez454By Dan Ambrose: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer pretty much ruled out the chance of his fighter WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) fighting WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) when Schaefer told Sports Illustrated writer Chris Mannix “At this point I don’t think it [Alvarez-Trout] will happen.”

Schaefer didn’t say why it wouldn’t happen, just that it wouldn’t likely happen. If the fight doesn’t happen it won’t be because of lack of interest on Trout’s part because he badly wants to fight Canelo because he sees weakness there and he believes he can school the young 22-year-old Mexican fighter.

Schaefer doesn’t see Canelo vs. Trout taking place

trout45By Dan Ambrose: Despite WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout’s comments that a fight between him and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is close to being made for May 4th. Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, the promoter for Alvarez, says he doubts that fight will take place. He does say that Trout is one of the options that he’s considering for Alvarez’s next fight date, but it’s still not likely.

Sports Illustrated writer Chris Mannix said on his twitter “Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer tells SI that NoDoubtsTrout is ‘being considered’ for Canelo but ‘at this point, don’t think it will happen.’”

Trout replied to the twitter, saying “There you go y’all kill all that excitement.”

Austin Trout vs. Canelo Alvarez “close” for May 4th

trout234By Dan Ambrose: WBA World junior middleweight champion Austin Trout (26-0, 14 KO’s) says he and WBC junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) could be fighting on May 4th on the undercard of the Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Trout said to the elpasotimes.co “Hopefully, we get the Canelo fight done. It’s looking good. I think it’s close.”

If this fight can happen it’ll give Alvarez a chance to try and avenge his brother Rigoberto Alvarez’s defeat to Trout from two years ago when Trout beat Rigoberto by a lopsided 12 round unanimous decision in February 2011.
