Garcia-Guerrero drew 2.5M viewers on PBS on Fox

garciaBy Dan Ambrose: Last Saturday’s welterweight contest between Danny Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs) and Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (33-4-1, 18 KOs) brought in huge ratings on Premier Boxing Champions on Fox from the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The Garcia-Guerrero fight drew 2.518 million viewers on Fox, which makes it the third best fight card on PBS, according to Lance Pugmire.

What made those numbers even more impressive was that the undercard really wasn’t stacked with talent and big names. In the co-feature bout, the light hitting #12 WBC welterweight contender Sammy Vasquez (21-0, 15 KOs) stopped high level journeyman Aaron Martinez (20-5-1, 4 KOs) in the 6th round after Martinez injured his left arm.

Keith Thurman(Photo credit Esther Lin/Showtime) By Dan Ambrose: If WBA World welterweight champion Keith Thurman (27-0, 22 KOs) can get past his tough challenger Shawn Porter on March 12 in their fight on Showtime, Thurman says he’s going to be looking to get a unification fight against WBC welterweight champion Danny Garcia (32-0, 18 KOs).

Thurman wants to carve a legacy of his own and take over the welterweight division now that Floyd Mayweather Jr. has retired. Thurman also believes that the only way to get the super money that Mayweather was getting for his fights is to take the risky super fights against the likes of Danny Garcia.

Guerrero came away from the fight feeling he had done more than enough to deserve a decision. One thing that Guerrero noted about Garcia was his punching power, or lack thereof. While Guerrero believes that Garcia has decent power, he doesn’t see it as the knockout power that he had when he was fighting in the 140lb division.

Thurman says Garcia is a future opponent for him, and that he has no doubts he’ll beat him and take away his unbeaten record. Thurman is talking about wanting to fight Garcia after Thurman takes care of business in his March 12 fight against Shawn Porter.

Mayweather had the fight scored a 12 round draw. The judges scored it 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112. I thought the scoring was too wide in favor of Garcia.

With the vacant WBC welterweight title on the line, Guerrero gave Garcia all kinds of problems in the first five rounds of the fight. Guerrero says he wants a rematch with Garcia, because he feels he should have won the fight.

According to Garcia, he wants to move on to bigger and better things rather than fight Khan or even Guerrero again. Whether Garcia will be able to skip past Khan to fight the better fighters remains to be seen.

Scores were 116-112 on all three judges’ scorecard.

Fighting for the vacant WBC Welterweight World Title in the first Premier Boxing Champions (PBC) on FOX event, Guerrero came out aggressively in the first four rounds using a solid jab and strong over hand left hands to control the action.

The final judges’ scores were 116-112, 116-112 and 116-112. I didn’t agree with the scoring at all.

I thought Guerrero won 5 rounds. If he had been able to do just a little bit more in the last four rounds, I would have had him winning the fight. Of course, with the way the judges scored the fight tonight, I think Guerrero would have needed a knockout to win. He was in a hopeless situation.
