(Matthew Macklin seen here after getting knocked out by a body shot from Gennady Golovkin) By Scott Gilfoid: British fighter Matthew Macklin says he wants to give some helpful tips to Kell Brook (36-0, 25 KOs) to help him get ready for his fight against IBF/IBO/WBA/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) in a little over two weeks from now on September 10 at the O2 Arena in London, England.
It’s hard to understand what useful advice Macklin could have for Brook to help him against Golovkin, because he was knocked out in the 3rd round by him three years ago in 2013. Macklin ran around the ring trying not to get hit by GGG. Eventually, Golovkin caught up with Macklin and knocked him put with a body shot in the third round.
“I fought Golovkin and didn’t fare too well but hopefully I can pass on a few pointers to Kell and hopefully he can do a much better job,” said Macklin to skysports.com.
By Scott Gilfoid: With four defeats in his last ten fights, former three-time world title challenge Matthew Macklin (35-6, 22 KOs) has reportedly retired from the sport after 15 years in the game.
by Matthew Macklin: Last month, at the O2 Arena in London, around the half way point in my fight with Brian Rose, I knew it was time to retire. My face was marking up, I was getting frustrated at not being able to land my shots and I knew that physically, after a long career my body was telling me that enough was enough. I also knew that I didn’t want to go out like that so with the help of my brother Seamus I decided to end my career on my terms and pulled the win out of the bag in the last few rounds. Deep down I came to the realization on the night that it was probably going to be my last fight. I turn 34 in two days time and, after much reflection I have decided that following 24 years in the sport, over 80 amateur fights and 41 professional fights, it is time to hang up my gloves.
By Scott Gilfoid: #8 IBF, #11 WBC junior middleweight contender Matthew Macklin (34-6, 22 KOs) will be facing former world title challenger Brian Rose (28-3-1, 8 KOs) in a scheduled 12 round bout on April 9 on the undercard of the heavyweight clash between IBF champion Charles Martin and Anthony Joshua at the O2 Arena in London, UK.
