Macklin destroys Herrmann in 1st round KO

By Scott Gilfoid: In a total mismatch, former multiple world title challenger Matthew Macklin (33-6, 22 KOs) completely obliterated a badly over-matched 28-year-old German fighter Chris Herrmann (19-7-1, 10 KOs) by a 1st round knockout last Friday night in a contest that was held at middleweight at the H10 Andalucia Plaza, Puerto Banus, in Marbella, Andalucía, Spain.

Matthew Macklin says he’ll retire if he loses to Welborn

macklin45By Scott Gilfoid: Former three time world title challenger Matthew Macklin (32-6, 21 KOs) says he’ll retire from boxing if he loses his October 17th fight against Jason Welborn (17-3, 6 KOs) at the Barclaycard Arena, in Birmingham, UK. Macklin will be dropping down to the junior middleweight division for this fight.

What’s interesting about that is it’s been nine years since Macklin last fought at 154 when he was stopped in the 10th round by Jamie Moore in September 2006. Macklin made the right move in moving up to middleweight after that fight. But I think it’s a horrible idea for Macklin to be moving back down in weight at 33.

Frankie Gavin vs. Sam Eggington & Matthew Macklin vs. Jason Welborn on October 17th

macklin56By Scott Gilfoid: Former world title challenger Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) will be taking his career in reverse mode in his next fight when he faces domestic fighter Sam Eggington (16-2, 9 KOs) on October 17th at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham. It’s not surprising that Gavin’s career is being taken backwards step after his recent losses to IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook last May, and Leonard Bundu in 2014.

In between those defeats, Gavin beat a mess of domestic level fighters and proved that he can bet those types of fighters. However, Gavin did have a controversial decision win over Bradley Skeete in 2014, which tells you that Gavin is basically a domestic level fighter himself in terms of boxing skills and talent.

Danny Garcia vs. Paulie Malignaggi possible for August 1; Daniel Jacobs vs. Sergio More or Mathew Macklin

garcia677By Dan Ambrose: 27-year-old WBA/WBC 140lb champion Danny Garcia (30-0, 17 KOs) is expected to be back in the ring in less than two months against 34-year-old former two division world champion Paulie Malignaggi (33-6, 7 KOs) kin a fight at welterweight on August 1st on Premier Boxing Champions from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Dan Rafael of ESPN is reporting that the fight is in the works. If the fight does come off, Garcia would be taking his third straight fight at welterweight. It’s unclear when he’ll be officially stripped of his WBA/WBC 140lb titles because Garcia hasn’t defended them since March of 2014.

Chavez Jr. vs. Macklin a possibility

Image: Chavez Jr. vs. Macklin a possibilityBy Scott Gilfoid: A fight between former three time world title challenger Matthew Macklin (32-6, 21 KOs) and former WBC 160lb title holder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) is a possibility. Chavez Jr., 29, is interested in the fight, which would take place at 168. However, Macklin and his promoter Eddie Hearn are both concerned with weight for the fight.

Macklin fights at middleweight, and he would be giving up a lot of weight to Chavez Jr. if he moved up to super middleweight to take the fight.

Joshua destroys Love; Macklin stops Micsko in 2nd round

joshua6By Scott Gilfoid: In a hopelessly one-sided fight, British heavyweight Anthony Joshua (12-0, 12 KOs) stopped Brazilian Raphael Zumbano Love (36-11-1 29 KOs) by a 2nd round knockout on Saturday night at Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, UK. Joshua dropped the 34-year-old Love with a right hand in the 2nd round. Love attempted to get back to his feet in time to beat the count, but he didn’t do it in time and the fight was waived off.

Love hardly threw any punches in the fight. He mainly moved around the ring in circles and covered up. In watching Love fight, I don’t know this guy ever knocked out 29 opponents in the past.

Chavez Jr. to fight in June or July, wants Macklin or Martin Murray

chavez524By Dan Ambrose: After having quit on his stool in his last fight against light heavyweight Andrzej Fonfara on April 18th of this month, former WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-2-1, 32 KOs) says he wants to return to the ring in two to three months to fight the likes of Martin Murray or Matthew Macklin.

Chavez Jr, 29, thinks that either of those guys would be good opponents for him. If Chavez Jr. fights either of those guys, he’d be reverting back to fight smaller middleweights again like he’s been doing for the past few years. Chavez Jr. moved up in weight to super middleweight because he could no longer melt down to 160 to fight in the middleweight division.

Martin Murray interested in Matthew Macklin fight

murray5By Scott Gilfoid: The recently knocked out #4 WBC middleweight contender Martin Murray (29-2-1, 12 KOs) is interested in facing former three time world title challenger Matthew Macklin (31-6, 20 KOs) in a domestic level clash if the 32-year-old Macklin is up for the fight.

Both guys are coming off of knockout losses, and both guys are kind of staring at a bleak horizon of dwindling opportunities. Murray, 32, is talking about wanting to move up to super middleweight, and his chances of making things happening in that weight class are arguably even less than they were at 160.

Macklin wants Paul Smith to go after Abraham early with body shots

abraham55(Photo Credit: Sebastian Heger) By Scott Gilfoid: Former world title challenger Matthew Macklin thinks that Paul Smith (35-4, 20 KOs) should take the fight to WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (41-4, 28 KOs) early in their fight this Saturday in attacking his body with left hooks when they meet at the O2 World Arena in Berlin, Germany.

Macklin thinks that Smith can wear Abraham out if he goes after his body with punches. Macklin thinks that Smith fell behind early in the first Abraham-Smith fight last September by not throwing enough punches in the first six rounds. This is why Macklin wants Smith to go after Abraham this time by attacking his body and throwing more shots.
