Bute–Pavlik discussions underway for possible fight in 2013

bute123By Scott Gilfoid: Discussions took place earlier today between Jean Bedard of InterBox, the promoter for former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (31-1, 24 KO’s), and the management of former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34 kO’s) for a fight that could take place in March next year.

Bedard told RDS.ca “We are still waiting to see if the fight between [Carl] Froch and [Mikkel] Kessler will take place. Eddie Hearn [Froch’s promoter] asked us for permission to negotiate with Kessler. We accepted, provided that a plan is presented to us that are interesting and Pavlik is a face.”

Pavlik vs. Bute possible for March; Andre Ward not ready to fight

bute2By Scott Gilfoid: It looks like WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) won’t be ready to face former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34 KO’s) on February 23rd like they’d planned, according to Steve Kim from Maxboxing.com. So, instead of Pavlik facing Ward, he could end up fighting former IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute (31-1, 24 KO’s) in a mouthwatering fight in March.

Bute is already looking for a fight in March, because the guy he wanted to fight IBF super middleweight champion Carl Froch is looking to face WBA super middleweight champion Mikkel Kessler in a unification bout.

Andre Ward wants to fight three times in 2013

ward6754By Scott Gilfoid: The talented WBC/WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) plans on having a really busy 2013 by fighting three times in the year starting with a fight against former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik in February or March. Ward is really hoping that IBF champ Carl Froch and WBA champion Mikkel Kessler will finally want to get off their backsides and face him so he can whip them again, but Ward doubts they’ll accept his challenge.

Ward said to Sky Ringside “We’re looking to fight three times this year if everything goes well. Hopefully my first fight will be in February or March and I’m looking for big things this year. Kelly Pavlik is first. I think Froch and Kessler are made for each other.”

Missed opportunities: Pavlik should have fought Bute when the fight was offered

pavlik34By Dan Ambrose: When you look at where former WBC/WBO super middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34 KO’s) really blew it in terms of reviving his sagging boxing career, you have to consider his decision NOT to face IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute when the fight was offered to Pavlik in 2011.

Pavlik had the opportunity to take the Bute fight, which would have given him a nice big payday, and he would have been in position to fight Carl Froch in another big fight. When you look at how easily Froch beat Bute recently in stopping him in the 5th round, you can guess that Pavlik would have easily been able to do the same thing to Bute if he had agreed to take the fight.

Ward vs. Pavlik, Arreola vs. Stiverne possible for March 2nd in Carson, California

ward55By Allan Fox: The Andre Ward vs. Kelly Pavlik and Chris Arreola vs. Bermane Stiverne bouts could wind up being moved to March 2nd at the Home Depot Center, in Carson, California, according to Steve Kim. The Arreola – Stiverne bout is currently scheduled for February 23rd at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California, but it get moved to be put on the undercard of Pavlik-Ward on March 2nd.

WBA/WBA super middleweight champion Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) injured his shoulder recently while training, and that made it necessary to push back his previously scheduled July 26th title defense against former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34 KO’s). As long as Ward’s shoulder heals up the March 2nd date could be the one that they end up fighting on, but shoulder injuries sometimes can linger for many months if proper rest and rehabilitation isn’t done.

Pavlik vs. Ward possible for February 23rd

Image: Pavlik vs. Ward possible for February 23rdBy Scott Gilfoid: There’s talk of rescheduling the fight between WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward and Kelly Pavlik for February 23rd or the first part of March, according to RingTV. The original fight date was January 26th, but Ward injured his right shoulder earlier this week, making it necessary for to postpone the fight with the 30-year-old Pavlik.

The fight will happen eventually once Ward’s shoulder heals up, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the injury drags out into April or May if he tries to start working out too soon. That’s the thing with shoulder injuries. It’s a tricky area and you can’t rush it otherwise the thing can take forever. James Kirkland still hasn’t fought after having shoulder surgery earlier this year following his win over Carlos Molina in March.

Pavlik vs. Ward on January 26th, in Los Angeles, CA

Image: Pavlik vs. Ward on January 26th, in Los Angeles, CABy Allan Fox: Former WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik (40-2, 34 KO’s) gets to be the next opponent for WBA/WBC super middleweight champion Andre Ward (26-0, 14 KO’s) in a fight televised by HBO on January 26th at the Galen Center, in Los Angeles, California, USA.

Pavlik has likely gotten the green light by HBO because he’s got a more recognizable name than top super middleweights Adonis Stevenson and Thomas Oosthuizen, because those guys would seem to be the better options for Ward right now.
