Golden Boy and HBO need to help develop fighters

linares234By Hector Gonzalez: Golden Boy and HBO need to think about long term longevity for boxing and stop thinking about quick money; By the way, these are not my words, Dana White the CEO of the UFC has the same critic about boxing.

He’s said several times that boxing’s problem is that it’s not investing in its longevity as much as it’s investing in 1-2 main attractions during the year while ignoring the potential talent that it has.

This is how Golden Boy and HBO are sabotaging boxing!

Linares beats Velazquez, wants DeMarco rematch

Image: Linares beats Velazquez, wants DeMarco rematchBy Dan Ambrose: Former featherweight and super featherweight world champion Jorge Linares (32-3, 20 KO’s) really struggled last Saturday night in defeating veteran Hector Velasquez (52-18-3, 35 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision by the scores of 100-89, 98-91 and 97-91. The lopsided scores didn’t tell the whole story of the fight, however, because Linares took a lot of heavy shots in the fight against the hard hitting 37-year-old Velazquez and didn’t look impressive in winning the fight.

In the early rounds, Linares fought well and was able to elude many of Velazquez’s shots. However, from the 4th round on, Velazquez was able to catch Linares up against the ropes and pound him with heavy shots to the head.

Jorge Linares vs. Hector Velazquez on Saturday

Image: Jorge Linares vs. Hector Velazquez on SaturdayBy Chris Williams: Former two division world champion Jorge Linares (31-3, 20 KO’s) will be trying to save his sinking career on Saturday night in taking on 37-year-old journeyman Hector Velazquez (52-17-3, 35 KO’s) in a 10 round scheduled fight at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento, California. Linares has lost his last two fights, getting stopped by Antonio DeMarco and Sergio Thompson.

It’s still a mystery why Linares was matched up against the hard hitting Thompson after having been stopped by Antonio DeMarco in October of last year. Linares took a real beating in the loss to DeMarco, and it was a huge mistake for Linares to be matched up with the dangerous Thompson. Linares, 27, must have felt he could out-box this guy without taking too much punishment, but that wasn’t the case.

Possible Comebacks in 2011: Linares, Salgado, Juarez

Image: Possible Comebacks in 2011: Linares, Salgado, JuarezBy Francisco Hernandez: Jorge Linares has a record of 30 wins and one loss. Before his lone loss, Linares was considered one of the top pound for pound fighters in boxing. The sage Don Chargin recently stated that Jorge Linares because of his excellent boxing skills continues to be the top pound for pound fighter in his opinion. There is something wrong with boxing when it relegates a fighter to oblivion because he loses a fight. That is why so many boxers today are afraid of losing and like Pacquiao end up picking and choosing straw opponents.
