Kevin Mitchell wants rematch against Jorge Linares

mitchell4356(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Scott Gilfoid: After getting whipped last Saturday night by WBC lightweight champion Jorge Linares (39-3, 26 KOs) in getting stopped in the 10th round, #1 WBC Kevin Mitchell (39-3, 29 KOs) wants an immediate rematch against the 29-year-old Linares so that he can have a chance of redemption.

It’s unclear why Mitchell feels he deserves a rematch considering that he was beaten to a pulp by Linares and legitimately stopped, but that’s what Mitchell wants. Surprisingly, Mitchell was ahead on two of the judges’ scorecards by the scores of 88-82 and 86-84 at the time of the stoppage. The other judge had it knotted up at 85-85.

Mitchell’s promoter Eddie Hearn says the fight was going to be stopped at the end of the 10th, and it would have gone to the cards where he feels Mitchell would have won due to his lead.

Kevin Mitchell would have beaten Jorge Linares if he’d lasted 10 more seconds, says Hearn

mitchell33By Scott Gilfoid: Last Saturday night we saw #1 WBC 135lb contender Kevin Mitchell (39-3, 29 KOs) get sliced and diced in losing by a 10th round stoppage to talented WBC lightweight champion Jorge Linares (39-3, 26 KOs) in the Rule Britannica card at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Mitchell was bleeding badly at the time of the stoppage from a cut on the bridge of his nose, which he came into the fight with, a deep cut over his left eye that he suffered in the 7th. As bad Mitchell looked at the time the fight was mercifully halted by referee halted by referee Victor Loughlin, Mitchell’s promoter Eddie Hearn believes that he was only 10 seconds away from winning the fight.

Kevin Mitchell v Jorge Linares – Prediction Mitchell to win @1/1, Mitchell to win by stoppage @10/3

By Ryan Allan: Home town favorite Kevin Mitchell will be hoping to make it 3rd time lucky in his bid to win a world title as he challenges the Venezuelan and 3 time World Champion Jorge Linares.

Mitchell lost badly in his 2 previous challenges, being stopped first by Aussie Michael Katsidis in 3 rounds before a 4th round stoppage to Scotland’s Ricky Burns derailed his 2nd attempt to win a world title but I have a feeling this will be Mitchell’s moment against a sometime vulnerable Linares.

By Scott Gilfoid: IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (34-0, 23 KOs) made weight on Friday for his title defense against an outgunned #4 IBF Frankie Gavin (22-1, 13 KOs) for their fight on Saturday at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Brook weighed in at 146.25 pounds and looked like he hadn’t had to strip off too much water weight to make the 147lb limit.

Kevin Mitchell: I know I’m going to win this fight against Linares

mitchell100By Scott Gilfoid: #1 WBC Kevin Mitchell (39-2, 29 KOs) did his part to earn his title shot this Saturday night against WBC lightweight champion Jorge Linares (38-3, 25 KOs) by defeating Daniel Estrada by an 8th round knockout last January in their WBC l35lb eliminator bout, but it seems that the victory for Mitchell has given him a big too much confidence.

Beating Estrada is a nice little feather to put in one’s cap, but it’s really not that big of a deal given that Estrada had previously been knocked out by Omar Figueroa Jr. last year in August and arguably didn’t rate to be fighting in an eliminator bout for the mandatory spot for the WBC.

Kevin Mitchell confident of victory against Jorge Linares

mitchell4By Scott Gilfoid: Fighting for a world title for the second title in his 12-year pro career, #1 WBC Kevin Mitchell (39-2, 29 KOs) is confident he’ll have his hand raised in victory on Saturday night when he challenges WBC lightweight champion Jorge Linares (38-3, 25 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

Mitchell, 30, will have the hometown advantage due to the fight taking place in the UK rather than Linares’ home in Tokyo, Japan. It’s going to be awfully tough for Mitchell though because Linares is arguably much better than Ricky Burns, a fighter that crushes Mitchell in just 4 rounds in 2012 in the last time that Mitchell challenged for a world title.

De La Hoya: Linares’ speed will give Kevin Mitchell problems

mitchell111By Scott Gilfoid: Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya doesn’t see challenger Kevin Mitchell’s hometown advantage being much help to him on May 30th this month when he challenges WBC lightweight champion Jorge Linares (39-2, 29 KOs) at the O2 Arena in London, UK.

De La Hoya thinks that Linares’ fast hands are going to trouble Mitchell in this fight. We saw how Mitchell struggled in his fight against the quick-handed Ghislain Maduma last year in May. While Mitchell wound up winning the fight in the 11th after Maduma ran out of gas, he was dominated in the first 10 rounds.

Deontay Wilder and Linares added to Porter-Brook card on August 16th

deontay899By Scott Gilfoid: The August 16th Shawn Porter vs. Kell Brook Showtime fight card just got a lot better with #1 WBC heavyweight contender Deontay Wilder (31-0, KOs) added to it to beef it up. Lightweight contender Jorge Linares (36-3, 23 KOs) has also been added to the card against an opponent still to be determined, according to Dan Rafael of ESPN. It’s unknown if the Deontay and Linares fights will make it onto the Showtime broadcast. They already have three good fights on the card that are scheduled to be televised.

Deontay, 6’7″, is waiting for a title shot against WBC heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne for later on this year, but now that Stiverne has a hand injury, it’s unknown when that fight will happen. Deontay, his adviser Al Haymon and Golden Boy Promotions don’t want to let him sit back and get rusty waiting for Stiverne’s injured hand to heal.
