Sanchez: We hope Geale will bring out the best in Golovkin

golovkin54(Photo credit: Abel Sanchez) By Allan Fox: Abel Sanchez, the trainer for WBA Super World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s), is hoping that former IBF/WBA middleweight champion Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) doesn’t choose to run from Golovkin when they face each other next month on July 26th on HBO at Madison Square Garden in New York.

For the most part Golovkin’s past opponents have elected to fight him rather than run, but Geale is a fighter known for his movement. It stands to reason that he’ll use even more movement against a puncher like Golovkin than he’s ever used before in the past. What this means is that it could be a dull affair potentially with Golovkin having to chase Geale around the ring for 12 rounds unless Geale realizes that he’ll never win a fight like that.

Cotto the new Ring 160lb champion, Golovkin below him

cotto664By Dan Ambrose: With his 10th round stoppage win over WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO’s) last Saturday night, Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) was made the new Ring 160-pound champion by Ring Magazine instead of unbeaten WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s), who is widely recognized as the real champion at middleweight by many hardcore boxing fans.

Golovkin is ranked No.1 by Ring below Cotto. In other words, Golovkin is like a contender with the Ring 160lb belt while Cotto is the Ring 160lb champion. This is kind of controversial because very, very few boxing fans see Cotto as being the No.1 overall fighter in the middleweight division, and by Ring having him as their champion, it kind of makes them look like they’re not up date with what’s going on in boxing.

Golovkin is just too dangerous for Miguel Cotto, says Robert Garcia

golovkin1By Dan Ambrose: Trainer Robert Garcia thinks that WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) avoid fighting WBA 160-pound champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) because he sees Golovkin as far too dangerous for the 5’7” Cotto to fight. Golovkin isn’t old and coming off of major knee surgeries, and he feels that he would be too much for Cotto to do with.

Instead of Cotto fighting Golovkin and likely getting knocked out in 2-3 rounds, Garcia thinks Cotto would be better off fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr in a rematch or facing Saul “Canelo” Alvarez if the fight can be put together.

“I think triple G is just too dangerous [for Cotto],” said Garcia. “He [Cotto] could fight Mayweather again. That’s a fight that people would buy. Cotto vs. Mayweather again. Cotto vs. Canelo. It would be huge – Puerto Rico vs. Mexico.”

Golovkin glad to be fighting Geale on 7/26 at MSG, in New York

golovkin566(Photo by Will Hart) By Allan Fox: After seven years as a pro, WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) will be fighting his first well-known opponent in former IBF/WBA 160-pound champion Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) in their “G4” card next month on July 26th on HBO from Madison Square Garden in New York. While Geale obviously isn’t as popular as guys like Miguel Cotto or Sergio Martinez, he is a big step up from the guys that Golovkin has been fighting up until now in terms of visibility and fighting technique.

Golovkin is quite pleased to be getting the fight with Geale, and he’s hoping that this fight will lead to bigger ones against the likes of Cotto, Peter Quillin, Sam Soliman and Carl Froch.

Canelo or Golovkin the best option for Cotto; Mayweather still too good

cotto88888By Chris Williams: Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) did his thing last night in beating up and taking the strap of an older fighter with bad knees in WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (51-3-2, 28 KO’s), but let’s not get things twisted by thinking that a victory over Martinez means that Cotto deserves a second shot at Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The win by Cotto proved pretty much zero given the age of Martinez, the condition of his knees, and the amount of time he’d been away from the sport. Cotto didn’t beat a good enough opponent for him to excite boxing fans about a second fight against boxing’s No.1 fighter in Mayweather. We’re already seeing this in a poll conducted today at Fightnews.com with fans picking Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin as the No.1 and No.2 choices for Cotto’s next fight in December. Mayweather, believe it or not, came in at No.3 behind those guys.

Arum says Cotto could fight Canelo or Golovkin in the future

cotto123(Photo credit: Sumio Yamada) By Chris Williams: Top Rank promoter Bob Arum would like to match newly crowned WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32 KO’s) up with former WBA/WBC 154-pound champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez and WBA 160-lb champion Gennady Golovkin in the future. Arum isn’t sure whether a fight between Cotto and Canelo can happen next, but he sees the fight as a distinct possibility in 2015 if both guys keep winning.

Canelo has a risky fight against Erislandy Lara on July 12th, and he would probably need to win that one in order to make a Cotto-Canelo fight a viable option.

Fights for Froch to consider before retirement

froch9993By Iggy Chowdhury: In the build up to the Froch vs Groves rematch I followed all the pre-fight hype (TV and radio interviews, all the sky sports Ringside coverage, the numerous internet articles etc). A lot of the times there was mention of Froch “getting old overnight”. Many pundits said Groves was too quick, had a better defence and would outbox Froch but this quite simply did not happen.

During the first 6 rounds of the fight there was very little separating the two boxers, Froch was much more cautious and judged the distance between himself and Groves very well. He had more success with the jab and established the centre of the ring, something he had failed to do in the first fight.

Arum prefers Chavez Jr. to fight Golovkin rather than Carl Froch

golovkin5623By Scott Gilfoid: IBF/WBA super middleweight champion Carl Froch (33-2, 24 KO’s) had been think about putting together a plan-B opponent for his next fight later this year because his plan-A opponent Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. could be facing Gennady Golovkin next instead of Froch. That’s what Chavez Jr’s promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank wants.

While he sees Froch as a fighter in with a big fan base in the U.S, he likely realizes that Froch hasn’t put in the effort to build a large fan base in the United State, so he doesn’t have a ton of fans when you look at the casual fans of the sport. As such, Froch’s dream of fighting a pay-per-view fight against Chavez Jr. in the U.S isn’t really a great fight for Chavez Jr. due to Froch’s lack of a fan base in the U.S.

Geale: a victory over Golovkin will get back where I want to be

golovkin99By Allan Fox: #3 WBA Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) is hoping to pull off a huge upset on July 26th when he challenges WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) for his WBA title at Madison Square Garden. Geale, 33, was kind of knocked down a peg last year when he was beaten by Darren Barker by a 12 round split decision. Geale lost his WBA title in that fight, and it was a fight that many fans had thought he was going to win. But Barker proved to be too strong for Geale in that fight.

“I’m pleased to be making my way back to HBO against Gennady Golovkin, a fighter who everyone thinks is invincible,” said Geale. “A victory will get me back to where I want to be. The people of Australia believe in me and that’s what drives me, my countrymen. I want to show them they have a great champion. On July 26th the world will see me back on top.”
