Geale: a victory over Golovkin will get back where I want to be

golovkin99By Allan Fox: #3 WBA Daniel Geale (30-2, 16 KO’s) is hoping to pull off a huge upset on July 26th when he challenges WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) for his WBA title at Madison Square Garden. Geale, 33, was kind of knocked down a peg last year when he was beaten by Darren Barker by a 12 round split decision. Geale lost his WBA title in that fight, and it was a fight that many fans had thought he was going to win. But Barker proved to be too strong for Geale in that fight.

“I’m pleased to be making my way back to HBO against Gennady Golovkin, a fighter who everyone thinks is invincible,” said Geale. “A victory will get me back to where I want to be. The people of Australia believe in me and that’s what drives me, my countrymen. I want to show them they have a great champion. On July 26th the world will see me back on top.”

Geale is taking a big risk in agreeing to fight Golovkin because he doesn’t really have the kind of power needed to be competitive with the hard hitting fighter. The chances are high that Geale is going to take a a bad pounding in this fight and end up getting knocked out. Geale likely sees this as a win-win fight for him, because with no one giving him any chance in the fight, it creates a really low bar for him. Geale can look good just by being able to last the full distance and make Golovkin work for a decision victory. If Geale does lose the fight then it’s still not a big deal because no one expected him to give Golovkin any troubles.

“I’m happy to be fighting at Madison Square Garden once again. Fighting in front of the great fans in New York City for the third time is an honor for me and I will train hard to defend my titles in style by giving the fans an exciting show,” said Golovkin. “Daniel Geale has a lot of world championship experience, is a big international name and I look forward to this challenge.”

This is not the big fight that Golovkin wanted, but it’s probably about as good as it gets for Golovkin. He’d like to fight Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Peter Quillin, Sergio Martinez, Miguel Cotto and Carl Froch, but those guys aren’t ready to fight him at this time. Golovkin is looking too good for the top fighters to show interest in fighting him. If he were more popular then fighters would take the fight just for the payday without worrying too much about the beating they would be getting.
